The crowded street erupted into chaos as people moved out of their way.
“Who are they?” Emma shouted.
The boy struggled to keep up.
“I don’t know their names. Mom only said they’re dangerous.”
The men chased them through the shopping district.
One of them yelled into a radio.
“She’s got the kid!”
Emma’s blood ran cold.
They weren’t just after the boy.
They knew who she was.
They ducked into an underground parking garage.
The footsteps behind them grew louder.
Suddenly, the boy stopped.
“There!”
Hidden behind a concrete pillar was a rusty metal door.
The boy pulled a key from his pocket.
“My mom gave me this.”
The door clicked open.
Inside was a small room.
A single laptop sat on a table.
Beside it was a video camera.
Emma pressed play.
The screen flickered to life.
And there was Sophia.
Alive.
Her eyes filled with tears as she looked into the camera.
“Emma… if you’re watching this, they found us.”
Emma covered her mouth.
“Sophia…”
Sophia continued.
“For eleven years I’ve been hiding because I discovered something powerful people would kill to protect.”
She looked directly into the camera.
“The boy with you…”
Sophia paused.
Her voice trembled.
“…isn’t my son.”
Emma froze.
The boy stared at the screen in shock.
Sophia took a deep breath.
“He’s yours.”
The room went silent.
Emma’s world shattered.
Then the laptop suddenly displayed a flashing warning:
LOCATION DETECTED
Outside, heavy footsteps approached the door.
Someone slowly turned the handle.
