Chapter 1 - THE BROKEN FAMILY FEAST Morning sunlight poured through the towering glass windows of the Vance estate, turning the polished marble floors into sheets of pale gold.

For a few precious minutes, the mansion felt peaceful.

Elena sat beside her eight-month-old daughter, Maya, carefully adjusting the tiny pink bow in the baby's soft brown hair. Maya giggled and reached for the silver rattle on her high chair, completely unaware that the woman sitting across the table was watching her with undisguised resentment.

Victoria Vance lifted her coffee cup.

She did not smile.

She did not even look at Elena.

"Could you keep that child quiet?"

Elena's fingers froze.

Maya had barely made a sound.

"She's eight months old, Victoria."

Victoria finally raised her eyes from her tablet.

"Then teach her manners."

The words landed harder than Elena expected.

For nearly two years, Elena had endured Victoria's cold remarks, subtle insults, and carefully disguised hostility. She had told herself that perhaps Victoria simply needed time to accept Maya.

But this morning felt different.

Victoria wasn't irritated.

She was calculating.

The Vance estate had belonged to Arthur Vance for decades. His real-estate and logistics empire had made him one of the wealthiest men in the region. Every room in the mansion reflected that fortune—marble columns, antique paintings, crystal chandeliers, and furniture that looked as though it belonged in a museum.

But Victoria wanted more than comfort.

She wanted control.

And Maya's arrival had changed everything.

The baby represented Arthur's bloodline. Her existence meant Victoria could never completely control the family trust.

Maya knocked her wooden block onto the floor.

The sharp click echoed across the dining room.

Victoria slammed her coffee cup down.

"Can you control your child for five minutes?"

Elena calmly picked up the toy.

"She dropped it."

"This isn't a playground."

Elena looked directly at her.

"Arthur loves having his granddaughter here."

Victoria's expression hardened.

"Arthur is an old man. He makes emotional decisions."

"Don't speak about him that way."

Victoria leaned closer.

"That child doesn't belong under this roof."

Maya's smile disappeared.

Her lower lip trembled.

Elena immediately reached for her.

"It's okay, sweetheart. Mommy's here."

Victoria watched them.

And in that moment, Elena saw something she had never seen so clearly before.

Not jealousy.

Not resentment.

Hatred.

Victoria wasn't trying to intimidate her anymore.

She was preparing for war.
