Chapter 18 - THE LETTER That evening, after the guests had left, Elena returned to the kitchen.
She noticed something on the counter.
An envelope.
Her name was written across it.
She opened it carefully.
Inside was a short letter from Arthur.
He had written:
"A family isn't protected by money. It is protected by the courage to tell the truth."
Elena smiled.
Then she noticed a second line.
"But there is one more thing I never told you."
Her smile disappeared.
She looked toward the study.
Arthur stood in the doorway.
He looked older than he had that morning.
"Arthur?"
He nodded.
"Tomorrow, I want to show you something."
"What?"
He smiled.
"Something that belonged to Maya's grandmother."
Elena's heart skipped.
She had never heard Arthur speak about it.
"What is it?"
