The mysterious phone call changed everything.

Ryan was still laughing when his phone buzzed. Once. Then again. Then again. The sound cut through the silence like something unnatural. He frowned, pulling the phone from his pocket. A notification from his bank. Then another. And another. His expression shifted slightly. Not yet fear. Just irritation. “What is this…?” He tapped the screen. The color drained from his face.

Account frozen. Incoming transfers canceled. Joint privileges revoked. He looked up slowly. At me. “No,” he said quietly. “You didn’t actually—” “I did,” I said. The words weren’t loud. They didn’t need to be. Across the room, my mother stood up abruptly. “What did you do to him?” I turned toward her. “I stopped paying for him.” Silence. A thick, heavy silence.

Then my father scoffed. “This is ridiculous.” But even he didn’t sound confident anymore. Ryan scrolled frantically through his phone. “No, no, no—this is a mistake.” His voice rose slightly. “You can’t just do this.” I watched him carefully. “You said I was bluffing.” He froze. Because now he understood something important. Bluffs require uncertainty. And I had none.

My daughter stood behind me, clutching my jacket. Still trembling. But now she was watching. Not afraid of Ryan anymore. Confused. But hopeful. Ryan suddenly turned toward me, anger replacing panic. “Over a joke? You’re doing this over a joke?” I tilted my head slightly. “You insulted my daughter.” “It was nothing!” That word again. Nothing. The same word people use.
