Chapter 10 - THE VAULTFirst National Bank was an imposing granite structure in the financial district.

I walked through the brass revolving doors wearing a conservative black suit, my platinum hair tied back in a severe bun. Around my neck, hidden beneath my silk blouse, the heavy iron key felt like a block of ice against my skin.

I approached the private wealth management desk.

"I need to access a safety deposit box," I told the teller, pulling out a fake ID and a forged power of attorney document I had drafted using Evelyn's stolen digital signature.

The teller typed the box number into the system. Box 814.

"Of course, Miss Vance. Follow me."

We descended into the underground vault. The air here was cool and smelled of old paper and copper. The teller led me to a massive wall of steel doors. She inserted the bank's master key into the left slot of Box 814 and stepped back.

"Your key, please," she said.

My hand shook slightly as I pulled the iron key from beneath my shirt. Fifteen years. Fifteen years of carrying this piece of metal, a burden that had cost me my childhood, my father, and my sanity.

I slid it into the lock.

Click.

The door swung open.

Inside was a single, thick leather envelope. I pulled it out, my chest tight.

"I'll need a moment alone," I told the teller. She nodded and left the vault.

I opened the envelope. Inside were the original life insurance policies. The real ones. They clearly stated that the sole beneficiary of my father's vast, hidden wealth was not my mother. It was me.

But there was something else. A small digital recorder.

I pressed play.

The audio was scratchy, but my father's voice came through clearly. “Evelyn, you’re poisoning me. I know about the offshore accounts. I know you’re trying to bankrupt the firm. If I die, this recording goes to the authorities.”

Then, my mother's voice, cold and chillingly calm. “You’re not going to authorities, David. Because if you do, I will drown your precious little girl in the bathtub, and I’ll make sure everyone thinks you did it before you killed yourself.”

A gasp escaped my lips. She hadn't just murdered him for money. She had used me as the leverage to force him to accept his death quietly.

I slipped the recorder and the documents into my briefcase. The ghost of the little girl who cried at the locked door finally vanished, replaced entirely by something lethal.

Evelyn thought she was a monster. She had no idea what she had created.
