Chapter 10 - The Woman Behind Serena

The mansion had never felt dangerous before.

It was only a house, Victor Blackwood had always told himself. Marble floors. Tall windows. Security cameras in every hall. Guards at every gate. A place built to make a powerful man believe that nothing could reach the people he loved.

Then one night, everything changed.

Victor finds his mother living under another name. She gives him original trust documents and explains how she spent years gathering evidence against Richard.

Victor did not react the way the people around him expected. He did not shout for the sake of shouting. He did not throw things. He watched.

He watched the faces.

He watched the hands.

He watched who looked at the floor when a question was asked.

And he listened.

“Tell me the truth,” Victor said.

Nobody answered immediately.

That silence told him more than any confession could have.

Lily finally spoke. “Sir, I was trying to protect him.”

“I know.”

“You didn't know before tonight.”

Victor looked at her. “You're right.”

His voice softened.

“I should have listened sooner.”

Mason Reed, the detective assigned to the case, placed a folder on the table.

“Mr. Blackwood, this isn't an isolated incident.”

Victor opened it.

Photographs.

Medical records.

Security logs.

Bank transfers.

Names.

Dates.

The pattern was impossible to ignore.

Someone had been building a case around Victor's family for months, maybe years.

Serena had not simply walked into the mansion and lost control.

Someone had prepared the ground beneath her feet.

Someone had given her information.

Someone had told her exactly where the cameras were.

And someone had known how much Victor was worth.

Victor looked at the evidence again.

“Who?”

Mason shook his head.

“We're still finding the answer.”

A door opened behind them.

Nora, the housemaid, stepped inside.

She looked exhausted.

“Sir, there is something else.”

Victor turned.

“What?”

Nora hesitated.

Then she walked to the table and placed down a small key.

“I found this where nobody was supposed to look.”

Victor picked it up.

“What does it open?”

Nora swallowed.

“The old part of the house.”

Victor frowned.

“That wing has been locked for years.”

“I know.”

“Why are you afraid?”

Nora looked toward the hallway.

“Because I was told never to go there.”

Victor stood.

“Then that's exactly where we're going.”

The old corridor smelled of dust and cold stone. The lights flickered as they moved deeper into the mansion. Victor's footsteps echoed behind Mason's.

A door appeared at the end.

There was no label.

No handle.

Only a keypad.

Mason looked at Victor.

“Do you know the code?”

“No.”

Nora whispered, “Try the baby's birthday.”

Victor stared at her.

“Why?”

“Because Serena used it once.”

He entered the numbers.

The lock clicked.

The door opened.

Inside was a room full of boxes.

One box carried Victor's name.

Another carried Lily's.

Another carried Lucas's.

Victor stopped breathing.

Mason opened the Lucas box.

Inside were photographs taken from different angles.

The crib.

The nursery.

The hospital.

The garden.

Even Victor carrying Lucas through the house.

Victor's hands tightened.

“How long?”

Mason checked the dates.

“Almost a year.”

Victor stared at the photographs.

His son had been watched almost since birth.

That was when he understood the truth.

This was not a family argument.

It was an operation.

And somebody had been preparing it long before Victor ever heard the first scream.

The evidence led them from the basement to the hospital, from the hospital to old business records, and from those records to people Victor thought he could trust.

Every answer created another question.

Every question opened another locked door.

Victor stopped trying to protect his reputation.

He started protecting the truth.

“I'm not hiding anything,” he told Mason.

“Good,” Mason replied. “Because whoever did this is counting on you being too embarrassed to tell the world.”

Victor looked toward Lucas's room.

“No.”

He shook his head.

“They picked the wrong family.”

Outside, the mansion gates remained closed.

Police cars waited beyond them.

The wedding date still appeared on Victor's calendar.

Six weeks.

But by then, Victor understood that the date was not a celebration.

It was a deadline.

And someone had already started counting down.

The final files reveal that Victor's own attorney helped prepare the fake guardianship case.

Victor looked at the final document.

His own name was printed at the top.

Under it were four words:

“DO NOT LET HIM SURVIVE.”

For the first time, Victor realized the plan was not only about Lucas.

It was about him.
