Chapter 3: Into the Cold Night

The heavy oak doors of the estate slammed shut behind them, cutting off the warm light and suffocating scents of expensive perfume. Outside, autumn rain lashed against the marble steps, bitter wind whipping Evelynâs hair into dark strands across her wet face.
Lilyâs small arms were locked like iron around Evelynâs neck. "Mommy... are we going home? Is the scary man coming after us?"
"No, sweetie. Heâs not touching you ever again," Evelyn whispered, her voice fierce despite the tears burning her eyes.
She hurried down the slick stone driveway toward her modest sedanâthe one car Julian hadn't bought her, purchased with the small savings sheâd kept from her late motherâs life insurance. She buckled Lily into the backseat, wrapped her own dark coat over the childâs trembling shoulders, and climbed into the driverâs seat.
As the engine turned over, Evelyn glanced back at the mansionâs illuminated windows. Silhouette figures moved frantically behind the curtains. She knew how Julian operated: his legal team was already being summoned, his public relations handlers drafting a narrative to destroy her before the sun came up.
She drove into the blinding downpour, her knuckles white on the steering wheel. Her mind raced. She couldn't go to her old apartment; Julian owned the building. She couldn't call her former friends; they belonged to Julianâs elite social circle.
Forty minutes later, the sedan pulled up to a small, two-story brick house nestled on a quiet street in the working-class district of the city. The porch light burned with a warm, amber glow.
Evelyn carried a sleeping, exhausted Lily up the steps and knocked on the door.
The door swung open to reveal Hannah VanceâJulianâs estranged older sister. Unlike Julian, Hannah had walked away from the family fortune ten years ago to run a non-profit legal aid clinic for domestic violence survivors.

Hannah took one look at Evelynâs ruined dress, her tear-stained face, and the child sleeping in her arms. She didn't ask questions. She simply stepped aside and opened her arms wide.
"Come inside, Evelyn," Hannah said softly, her eyes filled with profound sympathy and fierce resolve. "Youâre safe now. Both of you."
