Chapter 3 : The Call That Changed the Narrative

Chapter 3 : The Call That Changed the Narrative

By noon, the phone in my purse began to vibrate. It was Preston. He had called forty times.

I picked up on the forty-first.

"Maya, what the hell are you doing?" his voice was shrill, the sound of a man whose world was wobbling. "My bank called. They said the business account is flagged. My mother is hysterical—the police are at the house asking about the 'altercation'!"

"I told you I was awake, Preston," I said, my voice as neutral as a sterile lab.

"I'll apologize! I was stressed! We can fix this, just call the bank and tell them it was a mistake."

"There is no mistake," I said. "I’m not calling the bank. I’m calling your firm’s HR department. I’m sending them the video from the dining room."

"What video?" he stammered.

I didn't mention the hidden camera I’d installed in my purse—the one I’d been warned to carry by my own mother years ago, a habit I’d kept even in my "happy" life. I just smiled.

"The one where you hit your wife because she didn't cater to your sister. HR loves a liability, Preston. And you, with your firm’s reputation for 'family values'? You’re a liability."

The line went dead.

The Kingdom Falls

The "little kingdom" in Oak Park fell faster than the table had.

By 3:00 p.m., the local police had arrived at the house. My legal team had framed the "assault" not just as a domestic incident, but as a potential precursor to a more dangerous pattern. When the officers arrived, they found Eleanor trying to clean the spilled coffee off the floor, still insisting it was a "private family matter."

But Richard, the patriarch, was sitting at his computer, staring at a screen that had been locked by the bank auditors I’d alerted. He was a small man, and as I watched through the live security feed I’d synced to my phone, he looked like he was shrinking.

Morgan was crying, realizing that her "lifestyle" funding had been severed.

I didn't watch until the end. I had a life to get back to. I drove to my office, walked into my manager’s private suite, and handed her my official notice for a transfer to a different branch—one where I wouldn't be "Preston’s wife."
