Chapter 3: The Price of Silence

The fallout was swift and merciless. By the next morning, the video of the assault was everywhere. The "Bennett Family" name, which my parents had spent decades polishing, was now synonymous with abuse and corruption.

My parents tried to reach out, of course. My mother sent long, rambling texts about "forgiveness" and "keeping the family together." My father offered to pay for Sophie’s medical bills, provided I signed a non-disclosure agreement. I didn't even read them. I blocked their numbers. For the first time in my life, I didn't feel the crushing weight of their expectations. I felt... light.

The legal battle was long, but it was cathartic. I stood on the witness stand, not as the "quiet daughter," but as a mother who had finally woken up. I watched Preston get led away in handcuffs, his expensive suit wrinkled, his face a mask of bitter resentment. He had expected the world to bend for him, but for the first time, it had snapped back.

The hardest part was watching Sophie heal. She had nightmares, and the sight of a menu board made her flinch. But we began to build our own life. We moved to a small, quiet suburb, far from the reach of the Bennett family’s influence. We filled our new home with things we loved—books, art, and the sound of genuine laughter. I took a job that valued my skills, not my ability to suffer in silence. I wasn't the "useful" daughter anymore; I was a protector.
