Chapter 3 : The Sound of the Gavel

Chapter 3 : The Sound of the Gavel
The silence that followed the click of the woman’s heel was not merely an absence of noise; it was the suffocating weight of a reputation being erased in real-time. The guests, an elite gathering of the city’s most influential figures, shifted uncomfortably, their golden champagne flutes suddenly feeling like heavy liabilities. They weren't just witnessing a downfall; they were watching the dissolution of a man they had feared for decades.
Julian stared at the drive beneath her heel, his breathing shallow and jagged. The woman, whose name, Elena, had been whispered in hushed, fearful tones throughout the industry, leaned down. Her gaze remained locked on him, devoid of the theatrical rage he had expected. Instead, she radiated a terrifying, clinical calm.

"Look around, Julian," she said, her voice carrying easily to the edges of the room. "The people who stood by you, the allies who toasted to your 'brilliance'—they aren't looking for a way to help you. They are calculating their own exit strategies. They are already writing their statements to the prosecutors, distancing themselves from the rot you sold them as success."
As if on cue, the heavy double doors of the ballroom swung open. This time, it wasn't the rhythmic thud of catering staff or the grace of security; it was the sharp, coordinated entrance of federal marshals. Their uniforms were a stark, militaristic intrusion against the velvet and crystal of the gala. The lead agent, a man whose face was etched with grim efficiency, walked directly to the circle.
Julian tried to scramble back, his beige suit now crumpled and stained by the floor, but he was pinned. Not by force, but by the overwhelming finality of the situation. As the handcuffs clicked shut, the sound echoed louder than any gunshot.
"The board of directors is already convening," the agent said, his voice flat. "They’ve reviewed the preliminary data. You are officially removed, effective immediately. And as for your assets... they’re being frozen as we speak."

Elena stepped back, allowing the marshals to haul Julian to his feet. He looked small now, stripped of the tailored facade that had allowed him to manipulate the world. He looked toward Elena, his eyes wide with a mixture of terror and disbelief. "You think you're the hero in this, Elena? You’re just another player in the game. You destroyed me to build your own throne."
Elena smiled, a slow, sad expression that was more devastating than any threat. "I didn't destroy you, Julian. You built a house of cards on a foundation of lies. I simply opened the window."
