CHAPTER 5: The Gift of Grace

CHAPTER 5: The Gift of Grace

The final chapter of my journey wasn't about vengeance—though justice had been served—it was about peace. I received a letter from prison. It was from Garrett. I didn't open it for weeks. When I finally did, it wasn't a plea for forgiveness or a pathetic excuse. It was a confession, signed and notarized, detailing every crime the Harrington family had committed over the last thirty years.

He knew it was over. He knew he would never see the sun outside those walls again.

I burned the letter. I didn't need his apology to move on. I didn't need his confession to know my truth. I had the living, breathing reality of my daughter’s laugh, and the steady, beating heart of my son.

That evening, we sat on our porch, watching the stars emerge in the darkening sky.

“You know,” Quincy said, leaning his head against my shoulder, “I used to think that the world was just the way Daddy made it. That everything was cold and mean.”

“And what do you think now?” I asked.

He looked at me, a smile blooming on his face—a real, genuine smile. “I think the world is what we make it. And we made it good.”

I took his hand, and I took Violet’s. We were a family built not on blood, but on the choices we made to protect one another. The ghosts of the past were gone, replaced by the beautiful, unpredictable, and precious gift of a future we had fought to secure. We were home. And for the first time, I knew we were truly, forever safe.
