Chapter 3: The Weight of Evidence

Chapter 3: The Weight of Evidence
The air in the hallway felt suddenly electrified, a stark contrast to the oppressive stagnation of moments before. Sharp—the woman in the red dress—looked at the digital document on the screen as if it were a coiled viper. Her manicured fingers twitched, her usual mask of imperious grace replaced by the frantic darting of eyes looking for an escape that no longer existed.
"You can't prove that," Sharp spat, though her voice lacked its earlier resonance. "That document is a fabrication. A desperate play by a woman who has nothing left."
Elena, the woman in the black suit, stood up slowly. She didn't raise her voice. She didn't need to. "Fabrications leave digital footprints, Sharp. I’ve spent the last six months tracing every cent you funneled out of this estate. Richard’s signature wasn't forged by a novice; it was scanned from his medical files during his surgery last autumn. Do you want to explain to the authorities why your private offshore account is linked to the pharmacy that provided his 'supplements'?"
Richard, gasping for air as his strength slowly returned, looked up at Elena. His eyes, clouded by years of subtle gaslighting and forced isolation, suddenly cleared. "The medicine," he rasped, pointing toward the pill bottle Sharp had kicked away.

Elena caught the bottle mid-air before it rolled into the shadows of the grand staircase. She knelt again, her expression softening into genuine concern. "It’s okay, Richard. You’re safe now. No more 'supplements' that make you sleep through your own life."
Sharp bolted toward the side exit, her heels clicking violently against the marble. She reached the heavy oak door, but before her hand could touch the handle, two uniformed officers emerged from the shadows of the foyer. The trap had been set long before the confrontation began.
"The game is up, Victoria," Elena said, using the name Sharp despised. "You wanted to be the queen of this empire. But you forgot that a kingdom built on poison can never sustain its ruler."
As the officers moved in, Sharp let out a scream of pure, unadulterated rage—a sound that shattered the pristine silence of the manor. As they hauled her away, she glared back at Elena, her eyes filled with a promise of retribution. Elena watched them go, her face stoic, but as the door clicked shut, her shoulders dropped. She turned to Richard, who was now sitting up, clutching the evidence in his trembling hands.

"Why?" Richard whispered, looking at Elena. "Why help me now, after years of silence?"
"Because," Elena replied, "the truth is the only currency that matters in the end."
