Chapter 4: The Investigation of Shadows

The weeks following Victoria’s arrest were a whirlwind of legal proceedings, medical evaluations, and emotional recovery. Alejandro took an emergency compassionate leave from the military, refusing to leave my side for even a single hour.

We moved out of the family estate and into a quiet, sunlit bungalow near the coast, far away from the oppressive memories of the Vargas family dynamic. But the drama was far from over. Victoria’s high-priced defense attorneys were already pulling strings, attempting to secure bail and suppress the digital evidence Alejandro had captured.

"They are trying to play the mental competence card for her," Alejandro explained one evening, sitting beside me on the sofa as he gently massaged my swollen feet. His eyes carried a deep exhaustion, but his resolve was stronger than ever. "Her lawyers are claiming she acted out of a misplaced, obsessive desire to protect the family lineage, hoping to get her moved to a private sanitarium instead of a federal penitentiary."

"Can they do that?" I asked, my heart tightening with anxiety. "Alejandro, if she gets out, she won't stop. She has resources. She has people who loyal to her money."

"She had money," Alejandro corrected me, a cold, sharp smile touching his lips. "Yesterday, the military police and the FBI executed a joint search warrant on her private bank accounts and the family trust. They didn't just find the templates she used to forge my casualty notice, Elena. They found a paper trail linking her to systemic embezzlement from the military veteran non-profit she chaired."

I stared at him in shock. "She was stealing from veterans?"

"Millions," Alejandro nodded. "She was using the charity as a personal slush fund to maintain her lifestyle and pay off the corrupt medical professionals who were writing those fake evaluations about your mental health. The state medical board has already revoked the licenses of the two doctors she hired to shadow you. They turned state's evidence this morning to avoid jail time."

The depth of the conspiracy was staggering. Victoria hadn't just thrown a tantrum; she had constructed a highly organized, criminal machine designed to systematically erase my existence and claim my child as her ultimate possession. She viewed my middle-class background as a stain on her aristocratic family name, and she had been willing to destroy her own son’s happiness to scrub it clean.

The next morning, the doorbell rang. Standing on the porch was a woman dressed in a sharp corporate suit—Marcus, Victoria’s chief legal advisor and the custodian of the Vargas family estate. She looked thoroughly defeated.

"Captain Vargas, Mrs. Vargas," Marcus said, bowing her head respectfully. "I am here on behalf of the remaining board members of the Vargas Trust. In light of the federal indictments against your mother, the board has voted unanimously to strip her of all executive authority. Under the terms of your late father's original will, the entire estate, the properties, and the controlling shares now revert entirely to you."

Marcus slid a heavy leather binder across the table.

"Your mother spent thirty years trying to control this family by hoarding its wealth," Marcus whispered. "Now, she has nothing left but a state-appointed public defender. The board is begging you to take the chair, sir. The company is collapsing under the scandal."

Alejandro looked at the documents, then turned his eyes to me. He took my hand, his thumb gently tracing the gold band on my finger.

"I don't care about the corporate chair," Alejandro told Marcus firmly. "But I will accept the estate. And the very first thing we are going to do is liquidate every single luxury asset my mother owned. Every mansion, every sports car, every piece of jewelry. We are going to return every dime she stole to the veterans' funds, and the rest will be used to build a sanctuary for victims of domestic abuse."

Marcus smiled, a genuine expression of relief breaking across her face. "I think your father would have highly approved of that decision, Captain."
