Chapter 5: The Weight of Sins

Chapter 5: The Weight of Sins
The decryption of Eleanor's master drive took Silas less than an hour. What they found inside, however, changed the trajectory of Victoria’s entire campaign.

It was 3:00 AM. The penthouse was silent, save for the rhythmic tapping of rain against the glass. Victoria sat at her massive oak desk, staring at the sprawling spreadsheets and classified documents projected onto her screen. She had expected to find the usual corporate corruption—offshore tax havens, illegal lobbying, bribery.
But the reality was unimaginably worse. The drive contained the dark, bleeding heart of Vanguard Enterprises.
CONFIDENTIAL: PROJECT OLEANDER Status: Suppressed. Details: Chemical runoff from Vanguard Subsidiary Plant 4 has breached the municipal water supply in Flintridge County. Incidence of pediatric respiratory failure increased by 400%. Action Plan: Bribe local environmental inspectors, falsify water purity reports, and aggressively litigate against affected families to drain their legal resources.
There were hundreds of files just like it. Pension funds raided and hidden in shell companies, leaving thousands of elderly workers penniless. Sweatshops in Southeast Asia funded through complex proxy corporations. Dangerous, defective medical equipment knowingly pushed into hospitals to meet quarterly profit margins.
Victoria leaned back, feeling a profound, heavy sickness settle in her stomach. She had orchestrated this monumental heist to avenge her father and seize her rightful wealth. But looking at these files, the billions of dollars she had siphoned from Vanguard suddenly felt soaked in blood.
"Silas," Victoria called out, her voice echoing in the quiet room.
Silas appeared on the secure video link, looking exhausted but alert. "I see it too, Victoria. The scale of this human suffering... it's staggering. What do we do? If we keep the money, we are essentially profiting from these atrocities. We become them."
Victoria closed her eyes. The image of Julian’s arrogant sneer at the gala, and Eleanor’s ruthless hoarding of power, flashed through her mind. She realized then that true victory wasn't just about destroying her enemies or taking their throne. True victory was about breaking the cycle of exploitation entirely.
"We don't keep the money, Silas," Victoria said, her eyes snapping open, blazing with a new, fierce resolve. "We’re going to give it back."
"Give it back?" Silas asked, stunned. "To Vanguard?"
"No. To the people they stole it from," Victoria commanded. "I want you to set up a network of blind, philanthropic trusts. Wire the exact amounts stolen from the pension funds directly into the accounts of the workers. Funnel the rest into anonymous grants for the victims of Project Oleander and the other suppressed disasters. Empty our newly acquired subsidiary accounts."
"Victoria, that's nearly eight billion dollars. You're giving away the entire empire you just conquered."
"I am purifying it," she corrected firmly. "I will not build my legacy on the graves of innocent people. And as for Eleanor and Julian..." She looked at the encrypted files. "Package the environmental reports, the sweatshop documentation, and the medical fraud data. Send it simultaneously to the Department of Justice, the Environmental Protection Agency, and every major news outlet in the country. Let the world see the monsters they truly are."
The next morning, the world woke up to a seismic shift. The news cycle exploded with the leaked documents. The public outcry was deafening. By noon, Julian Vanguard, who had spent the night hiding in a luxury hotel, was dragged out in handcuffs by federal marshals, sobbing as the press flashed their cameras. He had immediately tried to turn state's evidence against his mother, but the overwhelming evidence rendered his cooperation entirely moot.

Eleanor, already in federal custody from the night before, sat in an interrogation room, staring blankly at the mountain of undeniable proof laid out before her by Special Agent Hayes. The Vanguard name was no longer just bankrupt; it was universally despised, permanently etched into history as a synonym for corporate evil.
Victoria watched it all unfold from her penthouse, a cup of espresso in her hand. The heavy burden of revenge had lifted, replaced by a profound, radiant sense of purpose.
