Chapter 4: The Midnight Mirage

David pushed the door open, his face pale with a mixture of annoyance and genuine alarm. "Mother?" He stepped into the carnage of the room. The lamp was shattered, the air smelled of broken stems and stagnant water, and the window was wide open, the curtains billowing like the sails of a ghost ship in the night breeze.

She could hear their voices drifting down, sharp and discordant. She had been right. It wasn't a ghost, it wasn't a hallucination—it was greed, pure and calculated.

She crawled through the mud, the cold seeping into her skin, her eyes fixed on the gate at the end of the estate. Every shadow was a threat; every rustle of the leaves sounded like a footstep. She realized that she wasn't just a victim of their cruelty; she was the architect of their downfall. She clutched the ledger to her chest, the leather rough against her palms, and began to run—or as close to running as her trembling legs would allow.
