Chapter 5: The Weight of Evidence

The rain turned into a downpour, obscuring the world in a veil of gray, but Janet didn't stop. She reached the main road, the headlights of a passing truck illuminating her like a deer caught in the glare. She didn't wave it down; she ducked into the shadows of a bus stop. She needed to reach the one person her son didn't know she still trusted: Arthur, the family’s retired head of security, a man who had seen the rise and fall of the estate for forty years.

As she reached Arthur’s small, modest house on the edge of town, the lights were still on. She pounded on the door, her hands raw and bleeding from the thorns in the garden. When the door opened, she didn't wait for him to speak. She shoved the ledger into his hands.

"They tried to kill me, Arthur," she sobbed, collapsing onto his porch. "They took everything—my dignity, my home, my son’s soul. They turned David into a stranger."

Arthur looked at the ledger, his face hardening as he flipped through the pages. He had seen the transformation in David, the way he had changed after marrying Elena. He had suspected, but the proof was here, written in black and white. "They'll be coming for you, Janet," he said, his voice grim. "They'll say you’ve had a breakdown. They'll try to have you committed by morning. We don't have much time."

The drama reached a fever pitch as a black sedan pulled into the driveway. Headlights swept across the porch like searchlights. David and Elena had tracked her. She could see Elena in the passenger seat, pointing, her face distorted by a mask of pure, unbridled rage. It wasn't just about money anymore; it was about covering the tracks of a lifetime of deception.
