Chapter 6: The Unbroken Horizon

Chapter 6: The Unbroken Horizon
Five years later.
The community center was vibrant with the sound of children laughing—a sound that, years ago, would have been silenced in the halls of the penthouse. Lily stood by the garden gate, watching as a group of volunteers planted flowers in the very spot where she had once stood in terror.
She was twenty-two now. The trauma was still a part of her, a faint scar on her psyche, but it was no longer the defining feature of her existence. She had graduated from university, she had found her own voice, and most importantly, she had found her own identity.

She walked through the center, meeting a woman who had once been a housemaid in her father’s home. The woman looked at her, and for the first time, there was no fear, only a shared, silent understanding. They had both survived the same winter; they were both now enjoying the same spring.

As she stepped out onto the sidewalk, the evening sky was clear, painted in hues of orange and violet. She wasn't running anymore. She was walking, slowly and deliberately, toward a future that was entirely of her own design. She remembered the man with the bat, the weeping child, and the siren’s wail, but those memories were like old, faded polaroids—distant and unable to hurt her.
She reached into her pocket, pulled out the old dog tag from a box she had kept, and dropped it into a donation bin for the center. She didn't need the metal to remind her of who she was. She looked up at the horizon, her heart light and her spirit unbroken. The kingdom had fallen, the prison was dismantled, and for the first time in her life, the world was wide open.
