Chapter 2 : The Tide of Yesterday

Chapter 2 : The Tide of Yesterday
The coastal breeze carried the scent of salt and blooming jasmine, weaving through the open windows of the sunlit kitchen. Three years had passed since the night Julian had carried Clara out of the suffocating darkness of his family’s mansion. Three years since he had traded an empire of deceit for a life of quiet, undeniable truth.

Julian stood at the kitchen counter, expertly slicing fresh fruit, a soft smile playing on his lips as he watched the scene unfolding in the living room. Clara, her cheeks flushed with a healthy, vibrant glow, was on her hands and knees, chasing a giggling, curly-haired toddler across the plush rug. Hope was a whirlwind of energy, a living testament to their survival. She had Julian’s dark, expressive eyes and Clara’s resilient, radiant spirit.
"You cannot escape the tickle monster!" Clara gasped, lunging forward and pulling the squealing three-year-old into a tight embrace, pressing loud, exaggerated kisses to her cheeks.
Julian chuckled, drying his hands on a towel. He wore a simple linen shirt and faded jeans—a far cry from the restrictive, three-piece tailored suits that used to be his armor. He was happier now, running a small, independent consulting firm that helped ethical startups grow. They weren't billionaires anymore, but they were wealthy in every way that truly mattered.
However, the tranquility of their sanctuary was abruptly shattered by the sharp, unfamiliar chime of the front gate buzzer.
Julian’s smile faltered. They rarely received unannounced visitors at the coastal house. The property was heavily secured, a lingering precaution from the trauma of their past. He exchanged a brief, cautious glance with Clara. The playful light in her eyes dimmed slightly, replaced by a shadow of the old anxiety she fought so hard to conquer.
"Stay here with Hope," Julian murmured, his voice adopting that familiar, protective steel. He walked to the intercom screen by the front door. The high-definition camera revealed a man standing in a sharp, immaculate charcoal suit, clutching a leather briefcase.
It was Marcus Thorne. The lead attorney for the family trust, and Eleanor’s most ruthlessly loyal sycophant.

Julian’s jaw clenched so hard his teeth ached. He pressed the intercom button. "You have exactly ten seconds to explain how you found this address, Marcus, before I call the local authorities and have you arrested for trespassing."
Marcus flinched at the harsh distortion of the speaker, slicking back his silver hair. "Julian. Please. I am not here on your mother’s behalf. I am here for the company. The board is begging you. We are facing complete insolvency. Without your leadership, the stock has plummeted eighty percent. I just need ten minutes of your time."
Julian stared at the screen, a cold wave of revulsion washing over him. The company. The very institution Eleanor had valued more than his wife's life. "The company is no longer my concern. My shares were liquidated three years ago. Leave."
"It's about the trust!" Marcus shouted desperately at the camera, losing his professional composure. "Eleanor... Eleanor is moving assets from inside the prison. She found a loophole in the severance agreement, Julian. She is trying to seize this house. She wants to leave you and your family on the street."
The silence in the hallway was deafening. Julian felt a chilling drop in his stomach. He turned around to see Clara standing a few feet away, holding Hope tightly against her chest. She had heard everything. The monster they thought they had locked away was still reaching her venomous claws through the bars.

"Let him in," Clara said, her voice shaking but laced with a newfound, undeniable strength. Julian looked at her in surprise. She wasn't the fragile, terrified girl bleeding on the marble floor anymore. She was a mother protecting her home. "Let him in, Julian. If she wants a war, we need to know her battle plan."
Julian nodded slowly, his eyes darkening with a fierce, protective fury. He pressed the button to unlock the gate. The ghosts of the past had returned, but this time, Julian and Clara were not going to run. They were going to burn the remnants of Eleanor's empire to the ground.
