Chapter 2 : The Ripple Effect

Chapter 2 : The Ripple Effect

The heavy oak doors of the Oakridge Academy dining hall had barely settled into their frames before the digital landscape of high society began to fracture. Within three minutes, the video recorded by a dozen hidden student smartphones had bypassed local networks and landed squarely on the secure servers of every major financial news outlet in the city.
By 2:00 PM, the ticker for Sterling Real Estate didn't just dip—it plunged off a cliff.
Eleanor Sterling didn't remember how she got back to her suburban estate in the exclusive enclave of Blackwood Hills. Her white mink coat was ruined, stained with the gray grime of the cafeteria floor and the acidic red of crushed tomatoes. She sat on the edge of her imported velvet sofa, her hands shaking so violently that her tea clattered against its porcelain saucer.
The grand double doors of the foyer didn't open; they were thrown back with such force that the plaster cracked against the wall.
Richard Sterling stormed into the living room. His tailored tie was ripped open at the collar, his forehead slick with a cold, desperate sweat. He didn't look like a real estate mogul; he looked like a man who had just watched his execution order being signed in real-time.
"What did you do?" Richard roared, his voice cracking with an ugly, unbridled fury that Eleanor had never heard in their fifteen years of marriage. He threw a heavy, leather-bound folder onto the glass coffee table, shattering a crystal vase. "Look at the monitors, Eleanor! Look at what your goddamn arrogance just cost us!"
"Richard, please," Eleanor whimpered, her icy composure completely disintegrated. She reached out, her perfectly manicured nails clawing at the air. "It was a setup. The girl... she was dressed like a scholarship student. She was baiting me! She wanted me to—"
"That 'girl' is the daughter of the man who owns our corporate bloodline!" Richard shrieked, his face turning a dangerous, mottled purple. "Vanguard Holdings didn't just call in the four-hundred-million-dollar line of credit, Eleanor. They exercised the immediate collateral seizure clause. By 5:00 PM today, federal marshals will be freezing our personal assets. The Blackwood estate, the penthouse in Miami, the private hangar—all of it is gone!"

Eleanor froze, the tea sliding from her hand and soaking into the pristine Persian rug. "No... no, they can't take our personal property. The prenuptial agreement, the corporate shield—"
"The corporate shield doesn't protect you from a federal assault charge against a minor!" Richard snarled, stepping back as if her very presence was contagious. He pulled a crisp, white document from his inside breast pocket and threw it at her feet. "My legal team spent the last hour drafting this. It’s an unconditional filing for divorce based on criminal asset endangerment. You came into this marriage with nothing, Eleanor, and after the Vanguard lawyers finish with the restitution lawsuit, you are going to leave with exactly the same amount."
