Chapter 3 : The Unraveling

The fallout was not loud; it was agonizingly slow. For the next week, the house felt like a convalescent ward. Michael did not return to the office. He didn't even check his emails. He set his phone on the counter and left it there, letting the screen light up with missed calls and urgent notifications, ignoring every single one.

He spent his mornings making breakfast—burnt toast and cold cereal, but he sat with them. He sat until they finished. He watched the way Oliver toyed with his spoon and the way Emily refused to make eye contact. He realized then that he was a stranger in his own home. He had to earn back their trust, a feat that felt more daunting than any corporate merger.

Claire remained a shadow. She spent most of the day in the sunroom, staring out at the garden. One afternoon, Michael found her there, wrapped in a blanket despite the heat. He didn't bring up work. He didn't ask how she was feeling. He simply sat on the floor near her feet and began to read aloud from a book Emily had left on the table.

He read for hours. He read until his throat was dry and the sun moved across the floor. Claire didn't speak, but she didn't leave. The next day, she stayed in the living room. By the third day, she joined them for a quiet dinner.

"Why are you staying?" she asked him on the fourth evening, her voice soft, lacking its usual sharp edge.

"Because I realized something," Michael said, putting down his napkin. "For years, I thought my value was what I could provide. The house, the school fees, the future. But the future is happening right now, in this kitchen, and I’ve been absent for all of it. I’m not going back to the office, Claire. Not like that. I’m starting over."

The admission was a risk. It meant instability, uncertainty, and a total shift in their lifestyle. But as he looked at Claire, he saw the first spark of genuine connection he had felt in years. The mask had dropped. The pretense of "busy" was gone. They were just two tired, broken people trying to find their way back to one another.
