Chapter 3 : The House of Cards

The federal indictment sheet against Julian Vance spanned over two hundred pages, outlining a staggering catalog of corporate fraud, tax evasion, money laundering, and premeditated extortion. For a man who had built his entire persona on luxury and untouchable influence, the reality of the legal system was a merciless meat grinder. High-priced defense attorneys whom Julian called upon for emergency legal counsel suddenly stopped returning his calls, their phones mysteriously disconnected or their firms publicly distancing themselves from the toxic fallout of the Vance scandal.

In the maximum-security processing wing, Julian sat across a reinforced glass partition from his former chief financial officer, Richard Sterling, who had also been arrested in a series of simultaneous dawn raids across the city. Richard looked ten years older, his tailored suit replaced by a coarse orange jumpsuit, his hands trembling violently against the steel table.

"You absolute fool, Julian!" Richard hissed through the secure intercom phone, his voice shaking with hysteria. "I told you we should have laundered those offshore funds through the European subsidiaries instead of leaving them exposed! Elena and her father didn't just stumble onto our ledger logs—they planted the trap months ago! They watched us walk right into the center of it!"

Julian slammed his palm against the glass divider, his face twisting into an ugly, contorted mask of fury. "Shut your mouth, Richard! Find a loophole! Pay off the federal judges like we always do! I am Julian Vance, I don't belong in a cage!"

"There are no loopholes left!" Richard screamed back, tears of absolute panic welling in his eyes. "The assets are seized, the accounts are frozen, and the federal prosecutor has unsealed encrypted audio recordings of you plotting to systematically dismantle Elena’s trust fund. We are finished, Julian. They aren't just putting us away—they are burying us."

The heavy alarm buzzed, signaling the end of the visitation period. Guards stepped forward, roughly hauling a weeping Richard back toward his cell. Julian stood frozen in his plastic chair, the crushing reality finally crashing over him. Every ally had vanished. Every hidden asset had evaporated. The magnificent castle of lies he had constructed over a decade had collapsed into dust in less than twenty-four hours.
