Chapter 3 (Continued): The Locked-Down Ward

...instead of the thousand-dollar silk swaddles Eleanor had bought to claim him as an asset, the heavy door to Room 412 clicked open.
I instantly clutched Leo tighter, my eyes darting to the entrance. But it wasn’t Mark or his mother. It was Dr. Aris, accompanied by two women in sharp, professional business suits. One carried a thick leather briefcase; the other held a digital recording device.
"Sarah," Dr. Aris said softly, stepping into the room. "This is Dr. Judith Klein, the head of our psychiatric department, and Maya Lin, the hospital’s senior risk counsel. We are going to secure your safety right now."
Dr. Klein pulled up a chair beside my bed, her expression deeply compassionate yet intensely focused. For the next hour, she conducted a thorough, comprehensive psychological evaluation. She asked about my history, my graphic design business, my late parents, and the systematic isolation I had experienced over the last two years. She noted the exact details of the daily "herbal teas" Eleanor had forced me to drink and the feverish day Mark had tricked me into signing the unknown documents.
When she finished, Dr. Klein turned off the recorder and looked at Maya Lin.
"The patient is exceptionally lucid, completely rational, and demonstrating completely normal maternal bonding," Dr. Klein stated firmly. "There is absolutely zero evidence of prenatal psychosis or psychological incompetence. The documentation provided by Dr. Sterling is not just a misdiagnosis; it is a weaponized, malicious fabrication."
Maya Lin opened her briefcase, pulling out a stamped document with the official seal of the state hospital. "I’ve already drafted the emergency medical declaration. Dr. Klein’s evaluation, combined with Dr. Aris’s clinical delivery report, is being uploaded directly into the Ohio state judicial registry. As of this moment, Sarah, you have full, uncontested medical and legal autonomy. Their fake surrogacy proxy is legally dead."
A tear of profound relief slipped down my cheek, soaking into Leo’s blanket. "Thank you. Oh my god, thank you."
"We’re not done," Maya Lin continued, her eyes flashing with a sharp, calculated brilliance. "Dr. Aris mentioned that the Vance family threatened to bury this hospital in litigation. What they don't realize is that by submitting that forged packet to a state-funded university hospital, they committed multiple felonies. It constitutes filing fraudulent government documents, medical identity theft, and conspiracy to commit human trafficking under the guise of an illegal adoption."
She leaned in closer, handing me a small, secure smartphone provided by the hospital’s security team.
"The Columbus Police Department's Special Victims Unit has already been briefed," Maya said. "Detective Martinez is outside right now, reviewing the security footage of Mark and Eleanor trying to intercept you. We need your formal statement, Sarah. We are going to turn their gilded cage into a prison cell."

I looked down at Leo’s tiny, sleeping face. The fear that had paralyzed me for hours suddenly sublimated into a cold, hard, unstoppable determination.
"Get the detective in here," I said, my voice steady and unwavering. "I want to tell them everything."
