Chapter 3 : The Echo of Deception

Chapter 3 : The Echo of Deception
The sanctuary, once a bastion of mourning, had become a war room of betrayal. Marcus rose from the stone floor, his shadow stretching long and menacing across the altar steps. Every instinct drilled into him by his father—the calculation, the detachment, the lethal precision—was now being redirected against the very man who had instilled it. He didn't look at the empty casket; he looked at his father’s retreating form, seeing not a patriarch, but a captor.

"Where is she?" Marcus whispered, the sound vibrating with the promise of violence.
The girl, whose name he now recalled as Elara—a figure from his past he had long suppressed—struggled to her feet. "They took her to the estate in the Blackwood Valley, Marcus. The place you were told was demolished years ago. They’ve been keeping her in the sub-basement, under the guise of medical treatment. She’s not dead. She was never dying."
Marcus felt his pulse thrumming in his temples. The implications were catastrophic. His entire career, his marriage, his forced compliance in his father’s business dealings—it had all been predicated on the "grief" of losing his sister, a grief that had been weaponized to keep him compliant and mourning. He turned to Elara, his eyes icy. "Why tell me now?"

Elara leaned against the cold marble, her breath coming in ragged hitches. "Because I couldn't be the only one who knew. They tried to break me, too, but I saw the logs. I saw the transfer orders. They didn’t just hide her; they were using her as leverage against you. Every time you veered off the path your father laid out, they threatened her life. You weren't a leader, Marcus. You were a hostage."
He paced the length of the aisle, the heavy mahogany doors of the chapel groaning under the pressure of the guards his father had left behind. He knew that the moment he stepped out of this chapel, he would be a marked man. He had to decide: continue the legacy, or burn it to the ground.
