Chapter 5 : The Price of Liberation

The confrontation in the sub-basement was silent and brutal. Marcus disarmed the guards with the efficiency of a man who had nothing left to lose. When he finally forced the heavy reinforced door to Clara's room, she looked up, her recognition flickering like a dying candle.

"Marcus?" she whispered, her voice a fragile, rasping ghost of the sister he remembered.

"I’m here," he promised, his voice thick with emotion. He didn't wait for pleasantries. He lifted her, ignoring her weakness, and turned to leave. But the corridor was already filling with his father’s men. His father stood at the end of the hall, flanked by shadows, his face a mask of disappointment.

"You were always the most capable, Marcus," his father said, his voice echoing with a cold, synthetic warmth. "And yet, you are the most foolish. You think you can walk out of here with her? You think you can destroy what has sustained this family for generations?"

"This family isn't a legacy, it’s a cancer," Marcus retorted, his hand resting on the weapon at his side. He didn't fire. Instead, he pulled a small transmitter from his pocket—the one he’d swiped from the security hub. "I’ve broadcasted the live feed of this entire facility—including the medical records of your experiments—to every major news outlet and the federal authorities. They’re ten minutes away. You have a choice: move aside, or be buried in the debris of your own empire."

The patriarch’s face contorted. For the first time, Marcus saw fear—not for the family name, but for his own skin. The empire was collapsing, not from an outside attack, but from the truth itself.
