Chapter 3: The Price of Autonomy

The meeting with Marcus in a dim, rain-slicked alleyway was brief and harrowing. He didn't look like a man who had once commanded a mansion; he looked like a man who had lost his soul. "You want to know about Julian’s 'intermission'?" Marcus laughed, a hollow, grating sound. "It’s not a discussion. It’s a transaction. He forces his targets into public debts they can never repay."

Marcus revealed that Julian was using the "charity" gala as a cover for a massive data-harvesting scheme, blackmailing the city's elite into compliance. Clara was only the latest in a long line of "investments."

"If you want to save her," Marcus added, sliding a small, encrypted flash drive toward Elena, "you don't fight him with violence. You fight him with the one thing he lacks: public scrutiny. You need to broadcast the footage from the dressing room during the toast."

Elena returned to the mansion, the weight of the drive feeling like a leaden anchor in her purse. The atmosphere inside had grown more opulent, more nauseating. She found Clara near the fountain, isolated for a fleeting moment.

"I have a way out," Elena whispered, pressing the drive into Clara’s hand.

Clara looked at her, and for the first time, the broken marionette showed a flicker of fire. "He’s watching us, Elena. Every camera, every guest. If we trigger the feed, he’ll destroy us before the signal even reaches the screen."
