CHAPTER 9: The Audit and the Exile

CHAPTER 9: The Audit and the Exile

The morning briefing was an eye-opening masterclass in corporate restructuring and familial corruption.
For three hours, the chief financial officer laid out the staggering scope of Arthur and Eleanor’s financial mismanagement. While Arthur had paraded around corporate headquarters as a high-powered executive, he had systematically gutted regional operating budgets to fund his lavish lifestyle, high-end sports cars, secret apartments in Manhattan, and expensive gifts for Chloe.
"In total, Mr. Arthur Sterling embezzled or misallocated approximately fourteen point two million dollars of corporate reserve funds over the last eighteen months," the CFO stated, sliding a thick binder of certified bank statements across the table toward me. "Furthermore, federal tax compliance violations resulting from his unauthorized shell companies are currently being reviewed by our forensic accountants."
I opened the binder, scanning the columns of numbers with a calm, analytical mind. I had a degree in corporate finance from Wharton—a fact that Arthur had intentionally forced me to bury when we got married, insisting that a Sterling wife had no business working in boardrooms.
"File the necessary corrective amendments with the IRS immediately," I instructed, my voice sharp and decisive. "And freeze all remaining secondary accounts associated with Arthur’s personal SSN. If he attempts to liquidate any remaining assets, the legal team will block it at the banking level."
"Consider it done, Madam Trustee," the CFO nodded, looking at me with a newfound level of professional respect.
"What about Eleanor?" I asked, turning to the head of real estate.
"Mrs. Eleanor Sterling attempted to transfer ownership of her personal summer home in the Hamptons into a blind trust at 8:00 AM this morning," the real estate director reported. "However, because the property was originally purchased under a corporate subsidiary of the Sterling Trust, our freeze orders intercepted the transfer. The property remains fully under estate control."
I leaned back in the large leather chair, resting my hands gently on my growing stomach. I felt no malice toward Eleanor or Arthur. There was no burning desire for petty revenge. There was only cold, clear justice, and the absolute necessity of protecting my child's future.
"Let them keep their personal clothing, standard household goods, and the Hartford apartment deposit," I said quietly. "Beyond that, every single asset acquired through Sterling funds must be recovered and reallocated back into the corporate reserve."
Mr. Caldwell offered a subtle, approving smile. "A remarkably merciful settlement, Madam Trustee. Most people in your position would have left them completely destitute."

"I’m not interested in cruelty, Mr. Caldwell," I replied, standing up from the conference table. "I’m interested in building something stable, honest, and secure for my child. And that work starts today."
"Before you resume your schedule," Caldwell added, stepping forward with a softer expression, "Mr. Harrison Sterling is awake, and he has requested your presence in the master bedroom."
