Chapter 3 : The Architect of Shadows

The ballroom was no longer a party; it was a crime scene. Guests began to sidle toward the exits, their phones out, their loyalties shifting as quickly as the wind. The "scavenger" Clara had insulted was suddenly the center of a moral earthquake.

Helen looked at Clara, her expression not one of malice, but of a pity so profound it seemed to wound Clara more than any insult could. "You stole my time, Clara. You took a young woman and turned her into a shadow. You thought if you erased my name, you could occupy my place. But you never had his heart. You only had his silence."

"He was mine!" Clara screamed, the mask of the sophisticated socialite falling away to reveal the desperate, ugly obsession beneath. "I built you, Tom! I saved you from that life! I gave you the status, the wealth, the keys to the world!"

"You gave me a cage," Tom replied calmly. "And I have been waiting for the right moment to break the lock."

He turned his back on her, a gesture of absolute dismissal that stripped Clara of the power she had clung to for two decades. He looked at the gathered crowd—the senators, the CEOs, the social titans. "The gala is over," he said.

As if on cue, the double doors of the ballroom swung open. Two uniformed officers stepped inside, not with the hesitant gait of men serving a socialite, but with the grim, procedural efficiency of men carrying a warrant.

Clara’s eyes darted to the doors. She tried to bolt, her dress a blur of crimson against the white marble, but she was stopped before she reached the threshold. The scene was clinical and swift. The cuffs didn't sparkle like the diamonds on her neck; they were dull, cold steel.
