Chapter 4: The Clearing

Chapter 4: The Clearing
The clearing was a private expanse of land Julian owned, a place where the city’s lights couldn't reach and the laws of the elite didn't apply. Victoria stood in the center of the damp, moonlit grass, her burgundy dress looking like a fresh wound against the dark earth. She was no longer trembling; she was resigned, the terrifying realization of her isolation fully settled into her bones.
Julian walked into the light, his silhouette imposing, a titan carved from stone and grief. He didn't shout. He didn't threaten. He simply stopped a few paces away.

"You thought you were playing a game of power," Julian said, his voice calm, which made the threat far worse than any scream. "But you were playing with a man who has spent his entire life building walls to keep his world from breaking. You broke the wall. Now, you get to see what lives behind it."
He gestured to the surrounding woods. From the trees emerged the figures of the men Victoria had once called her closest allies—the ones who had been bribed by her, intimidated by her, and used by her. They didn't move to attack; they simply watched. The spectacle of her social and professional assassination was complete. She was not being killed; she was being unmade.
