Chapter 3: The Unraveling

The paramedics were a blur of motion, voices shouting in sterile, clipped tones that pierced the heavy silence of the manor. Julian was shoved aside, his hands suddenly feeling useless and empty. He watched as they placed Chloe on a stretcher, her skin deathly pale against the black emergency blanket.

As they rolled her toward the door, Julian caught sight of Elena peering from the library doorway. She looked like a ghost, her hair undone, her expensive gown torn at the hem. There was no defiance left in her eyes, only a hollow, terrifying vacancy. She had realized, finally, that the destruction she sought to avoid was the only thing left standing.

Julian didn't look at her again. He turned toward the detectives swarming the foyer, their flashlights casting long, distorted shadows against the gilded molding. One of them, a man with tired eyes and a heavy coat, approached him.

"We need a statement, sir. Right now."

"She was pushed," Julian said, his voice flat, devoid of emotion. "By the woman currently hiding in the library. She has the ledgers, the accounts, and the proof of every transaction that has kept this house running for the last decade."

The detective paused, his eyes narrowing. "You're talking about a high-profile family, Julian. Do you have any idea what you're implicating yourself in?"

"I know exactly," Julian replied. "I'm the one who provided the encryption keys."

The house was cordoned off within minutes. Elena was cornered in the study, and for the first time, Julian heard her scream—not a scream of rage, but of pure, unadulterated terror as the officers slapped the cuffs on her wrists. The sound echoed up the grand staircase, bouncing off the vaulted ceilings like a curse.

As they dragged her past him, she didn't beg or threaten. She simply stopped, meeting his gaze with a look of profound betrayal. "You think you’re the hero, Julian? You think you’ll walk away from this?"

"I don't plan on walking away," he said, watching her go. "I plan on starting over."
