Chapter 4: Echoes in the Concrete

Three hundred miles away, the harsh, fluorescent-lit confines of the federal detention center offered no comfort to the fallen heiress.

Cynthia sat rigidly on the edge of a bolted steel bunk, wearing a coarse, drab orange jumpsuit. Her meticulously styled hair was unwashed, and the expensive makeup that once hid her cold, calculating nature was gone, revealing pale, drawn skin.

The heavy steel door of her cell clanked open, and a female guard tapped her baton against the bars. "Vance. Legal visitor in Booth Three."

Cynthia’s head snapped up, a desperate flicker of hope igniting in her dark eyes. Perhaps her last remaining corporate ally had found a loophole. Perhaps the bail motion had finally been granted. She stood up quickly, smoothing down her jumpsuit with shaking hands, and followed the guard down the concrete corridor.

Sitting behind the thick, smudged glass partition of the visitation booth was not a lawyer, but a junior associate from her former firm—someone she had once publicly humiliated during a quarterly audit.

Cynthia picked up the heavy plastic receiver, her hand trembling. She pressed it to her ear, sneering through her panic. "Did the judge reconsider the bail? Tell me the appellate court threw out Marcus’s video evidence!"

The associate looked at her with complete detachment. "There is no bail, Cynthia. And the video evidence is bulletproof. I’m here because the federal bankruptcy court has officially finalized the total dissolution of your personal holdings."

Cynthia’s breath hitched, the color draining entirely from her face. "My personal trusts... my offshore real estate... they can't touch those. I set them up through impenetrable shell companies!"

"Marcus and his legal team tracked every single cent using the financial trails you left behind," the associate replied flatly. "Your shell companies were dismantled yesterday. Every asset you owned has been seized to cover restitution."

Cynthia slammed her fist against the glass partition, her face contorting into an ugly mask of unhinged rage. "I built that empire! They are nothing without me! They stole my life!"

"You built an empire on glass, Cynthia," the associate said quietly, standing up and sliding his chair back. "And it finally shattered."

Before Cynthia could scream another threat, the associate hung up the receiver and walked out of the room. She sat frozen, staring blindly at her own distorted reflection in the glass. The untouchable corporate predator was completely gone, left with nothing but the chilling echoes of her own greed.
