Chapter 4: The House of Cards

By noon, the city was buzzing. The files Elena had leaked had hit the wire, and the mainstream media was having a field day. "The Glass Dynasty Crumbles," the headlines screamed. Stocks in the family firm were plummeting, and the authorities were already knocking on the doors of the main estate.

Elena watched the news from a public library terminal, her daughter playing quietly with a tablet nearby. She was a different person than the one who had fled the ballroom. She walked with a poise that had nothing to do with pedigree and everything to do with purpose.

The drama escalated when Eleanor herself appeared on a live televised interview, attempting to spin the narrative. She looked haggard, her usual mask of iron-willed perfection cracked wide open. "A disgruntled daughter-in-law with an active imagination," Eleanor scoffed, her voice shaking just enough to betray her.

But then, the host interrupted her, holding up a tablet. "Mrs. Sterling, we have just received authenticated bank logs showing your signature on three accounts in the Cayman Islands. These match the files leaked this morning. How do you respond?"

Eleanor froze, the cameras capturing the exact moment her empire died. Elena turned the TV off. She didn't need to see the rest. She walked out of the library, the cool air of the city feeling like freedom. As she stepped onto the sidewalk, a black sedan pulled up—the firm’s lead lawyer, a man who had ignored her for years.

"Elena," he said, stepping out, his suit impeccably pressed but his eyes filled with genuine anxiety. "We have a proposal. If you pull the remaining documents, we can settle this. Full custody, a generous alimony, and a clean exit. Just... stop the bleeding."

Elena looked at him, then at the bustling street around her. She realized she had all the power she had ever craved, not because she wanted it, but because she had been the only one willing to tell the truth. "The bleeding stopped when I left that house," she said, closing the door of the sedan in his face.
