Chapter 3: The Gathering Storm

Chapter 3: The Gathering Storm
The cold morning mist clung heavily to the glass facade of the Vance Global Tower, rolling off the river like a shroud over a dying giant. Inside the seventy-second-floor executive suite, the atmosphere was thick with the silent, suffocating terror of an impending avalanche.

Julian Vance stood before the floor-to-ceiling windows, staring blankly down at the plaza where the morning traffic crept by like ants. His knuckles were white as he gripped a crystal tumbler of scotch—his third since dawn. His eyes were bloodshot, rimmed with the exhaustion of a man who had not slept a wink since the catastrophe at the gala.
The heavy mahogany doors flew open without a knock, and Richard, his senior vice president and cousin, burst into the room. Richard's tie was undone, his hair disheveled, and a tablet shook violently in his hand.
"It's happening, Julian," Richard choked out, his voice cracking with panic. "The federal marshals have just frozen all corporate assets. Every domestic account, every operational line of credit—locked. The board is in full mutiny. They’re calling an emergency vote to strip you of your CEO title by noon."
Julian didn't turn around. His voice, when it came, was a hollow, defeated whisper. "And the Supreme Financial Directorate?"
"They bypassed our legal team entirely," Richard swallowed hard, stepping closer. "The audit files Elena handed over... they didn't just contain our tax anomalies. They mapped out the exact shell companies we used to drain her father's estate five years ago. It’s an open-and-shut case of systemic racketeering and corporate murder by proxy. The Attorney General is holding a press conference at ten o'clock."
A bitter, humorless laugh escaped Julian’s lips. He had spent a decade building a fortress of wealth and intimidation, believing that money could buy immunity, loyalty, and silence. But in a single evening, a woman he had treated like a servant had dismantled his entire world with a single envelope.

"Find her," Julian commanded, finally turning around, his face twisting into a mask of desperate malice. "Find Elena. Offer her fifty percent—no, seventy percent of the remaining offshore holdings. Whatever it takes. If she signs a retraction and claims the audit was a coerced fabrication, we can buy enough time to flee the jurisdiction."

Richard stared at him like he had lost his mind. "Flee? Julian, the airspace is flagged. Our passports are revoked. We are trapped."
Before Julian could retort, a sharp chime echoed from the suite's private elevator. The double doors slid open with a smooth, metallic hiss.
