Chapter 2

Chapter 3 : The Embers of an Empire
Inside the manor, the silence was suffocating. Julian stood frozen by the doorway long after Clara had vanished down the drive. The weight of his own decree settled over him like a lead shroud. He turned slowly to look at the foyer.

His mother, the grand matriarch of the family, was still slumped on the lower step of the grand staircase, her silver hair disheveled, weeping uncontrollably against the shoulder of the head maid—the very woman Clara had forced to her knees just minutes prior. The humiliation was total.
"Julian," his mother choked out, her voice cracking as she looked up at him through a haze of tears. "She... she has the ledgers. The physical books from the safe. If the authorities find them..."
"Let them find them," Julian snapped, though his voice lacked the lethal fire he had brandished at Clara. He walked over, the anger draining out of him, leaving behind a cold, hollow terror. For the first time, he realized the magnitude of his family’s sins. They hadn't just lost their fortune; they had built a prison out of lies, and Clara had simply handed them the key from the inside.
He knelt beside his mother, touching her trembling shoulder. "We need to leave. Now. Before the police arrive."
"Leave?" She let out a hysterical, broken laugh. "Where can we go, Julian? Every account is tied to the family name. Every asset is frozen or flagged. We are ghosts."

Julian stood up, walking toward the tall, arched windows that overlooked the front lawn. The estate looked peaceful under the summer sun, but he knew the storm was already breaking. He thought of Clara, her maroon dress a splash of blood against the pristine marble. She hadn't broken under his command; she had welcomed it. She wanted him to throw her out, because being cast away gave her the legal standing to break their non-disclosure agreements and blow the entire operation wide open.
He had played right into her hands.
