Chapter 5 : The New Foundation
Six months later, the city had moved on, and so had we. The penthouse was sold, replaced by a modest, sun-drenched house on the edge of the city. There were no marble floors to polish, no staff to manage, and no secrets to hide behind.
I walked into the kitchen, carrying groceries, and heard the sound of music playing—not the classical compositions that used to drone on in the background of the penthouse, but something upbeat and real. Lily was at the counter, her hands covered in flour, attempting to bake a cake for our Sunday breakfast. She was laughing, the sound ringing out in a way that made my chest ache with joy.
I set the bags down and joined her. We were a mess—flour on our clothes, eggshells on the counter, and absolutely nothing to prove to the world.
"Think it’ll rise?" she asked, grinning at me.
"I think it’s already risen," I said, wiping a smudge of flour from her nose.

I looked out the window. It was a simple backyard, but for the first time in my life, I felt like the master of my own domain. I had learned that the most important empire wasn't the one that showed up in the financial news; it was the one built on trust, presence, and the courage to protect those who couldn't protect themselves.
I had come back for a purpose, and I had achieved it. Not by winning the battle in the boardroom, but by reclaiming my place as a father. As the sun set, casting a golden glow over our simple kitchen, I knew that the drama of the past was gone, washed away by the tides of an honest life. We were finally safe, we were finally together, and for the first time, we were truly happy.
