Chapter 7 : Absolute Sovereignty

Two months later, the annual Winter Charity Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art was underway. It was the most exclusive, high-society event of the Manhattan calendar—a glittering nexus of billionaires, politicians, international diplomats, and cultural elites.

Two years ago, Isabella had attended this exact gala as Marcus Sterling’s arm candy—silently enduring patronizing remarks, forced to smile while her husband dismissed her intellect and his mother insulted her background.

Tonight, the massive double doors of the Grand Hall swung open, and the entire room fell into a sudden, breathless hush.

Isabella entered.

She wore a breathtaking, custom-tailored emerald silk gown that shimmered like liquid jade under the crystal chandeliers. A diamond-encrusted platinum necklace rested against her collarbone, catching the light with every measured, confident step. She wasn't escorted by a man; she walked alone, an undisputed sovereign commanding the absolute center of gravity in the room.

As she descended the grand marble staircase, heads turned in unison. Powerful CEOs who had once scoffed at her now offered deep, respectful nods. Society matrons who had once whispered behind her back rushed forward with eager, obsequious smiles, desperate for even a brief glance of recognition from the most powerful woman in the western hemisphere.

Clara followed a few steps behind, carrying a sleek tablet and maintaining a watchful, protective perimeter.

"Good evening, Miss Vanguard," the director of the museum greeted her effusively, practically bowing as she reached the floor. "We are profoundly honored by your presence tonight. And especially by Vanguard’s historic grant contribution to our cultural preservation fund."

"Thank you," Isabella replied, her voice cool, elegant, and entirely unbothered by the adoration swirling around her. "Culture belongs to the public, not to private egos. I’m simply ensuring it stays where it belongs."

She moved gracefully through the crowd, accepting polite greetings with effortless poise. Stopping near the edge of the grand balcony, she looked out over the glittering expanse of Central Park through the towering arched windows.

She raised a flute of sparkling champagne to her lips, taking a slow, contemplative sip. Her fingers lightly brushed her left cheek. The skin was completely smooth, flawless, and unmarked. The past was entirely dead, buried beneath federal prison cells, bankrupt estates, and the unstoppable momentum of her own absolute power.

She wasn't a victim who had sought vengeance. She was an architect who had cleared away the rubble to build an empire of her own design. And as the city lights flickered across the skyline below her, Isabella smiled—not with malice, but with the quiet, unshakeable peace of a queen who finally ruled her world.
