Chapter 3 : The Glass Fortress

Chapter 3 : The Glass Fortress
The Vance Corporation headquarters pierced the Manhattan skyline like a diamond-tipped spear, a monument to ruthlessness and cold ambition. For twenty-five years, Clara had looked at that building from the grimy windows of public buses, viewing it as an unreachable citadel of the elite. On Monday morning, exactly forty-eight hours after her wedding shattered into a million irrecoverable pieces, she walked through its revolving glass doors.

She was no longer wearing satin or lace. Clara was dressed in a sharp, tailored charcoal suit she had bought off the rack, her hair pulled back into an unforgiving bun. Flanking her were three of the most vicious corporate litigators in New York—paid for by a line of credit secured against her newly verified DNA results.
The sprawling lobby, usually humming with the hushed arrogance of Wall Street billionaires, fell dead silent as she approached the reception desk. The security guards, men who had been ordered to throw her out if she ever showed her face again, stood frozen.
"Seventy-fifth floor," Clara said, her voice devoid of any warmth. "The executive boardroom."
Upstairs, the atmosphere was toxic. The Board of Directors—twelve men and women who had grown obscenely wealthy under Richard Vance’s tyrannical rule—were shouting over each other. At the head of the long mahogany table sat Eleanor Vance. She looked as though she had aged a decade over the weekend. The aristocratic fire that usually animated her features was extinguished, leaving behind a hollow, terrified shell.
The heavy oak doors swung open. Clara walked in, the heels of her shoes clicking rhythmically against the hardwood floor. It sounded like a countdown.
"What is the meaning of this?" demanded Marcus Thorne, the Chief Financial Officer and Richard’s former right-hand man. He was a shark in a Brioni suit, his eyes narrowing with disgust. "Security! Remove this woman. This is a closed emergency session regarding the disappearance of our CEO, Julian Vance."
"Julian Vance does not exist," Clara said, her voice cutting through the room like a sniper's bullet. She slapped a thick, leather-bound folder onto the center of the table. "My legal team has already filed the injunctions. The man you knew as Julian was purchased illegally from Eastern Europe. The DNA tests, expedited and verified by three independent labs, confirm that I am Clara Vance. The sole biological heir to Richard and Eleanor Vance."
The room erupted into chaos. Men slammed their fists on the table; lawyers began shouting legal jargon. Clara simply stood there, an immovable force, letting the storm rage around her. She looked at Eleanor. Her biological mother flinched, unable to meet her gaze.
"This is a fabrication!" Marcus sneered, stepping toward Clara. "A pathetic cash grab by a gutter-snipe who got left at the altar. Richard Vance was a man of impeccable integrity. You think you can waltz in here with forged medical records and steal a Fortune 500 company?"
"Integrity?" Clara laughed, a harsh, dry sound. "Richard Vance traded his own flesh and blood to protect his ego because he didn't want a female CEO. He paid a doctor to fake my death. And Eleanor," Clara turned her piercing gaze to her mother, "signed the adoption papers for a stolen child to hide the paper trail."

"Eleanor, tell them this is a lie!" Marcus demanded, panic finally bleeding into his arrogant tone. If this was true, the scandal would tank the stock by noon.
Eleanor slowly stood up. Her hands were trembling so violently she had to grip the edge of the table to steady herself. She looked around at the board members, the people she had entertained at galas, the people who had enabled her husband's cruelty. Then, she looked at Clara. For the first time, she truly saw the resemblance. Clara had Richard’s jawline, but she had Eleanor’s eyes.
"It is all true," Eleanor whispered, her voice cracking. "Every word. May God forgive us. She is my daughter. And by the bylaws of this company, she owns the controlling shares."
Marcus turned purple with rage. "You stupid, hysterical woman! You've just destroyed this company!"
Clara moved faster than anyone anticipated. She stepped directly into Marcus’s personal space, refusing to be intimidated by his height. "No, Mr. Thorne. I am going to save it. You have twenty-four hours to clear out your desk before I launch a full forensic audit into the overseas accounts Richard used to buy human lives. Because I know you managed that money. If you fight me, I will see you in federal prison."

Marcus opened his mouth to argue, but the icy, murderous intent in Clara’s eyes silenced him. She was no longer the frightened orphan. She was a Vance.
"Now," Clara said, turning to address the stunned room, her voice echoing with absolute authority. "Everyone sit down. We have a company to restructure."
