Chapter 3: The Fractured Lineage

Daniel returned home with the weight of an entire history pressing down on his chest. When he stepped into the kitchen, the air felt different. Emma looked up, her face pale.

"Daniel... she called," Emma said, her voice trembling.

"Who?"

"Your mother. She somehow bypassed the blockers. She didn't scream. She didn't threaten. She just whispered: 'I hope you’ve enjoyed playing house, because the house is built on a grave.'"

Daniel dropped the lockbox onto the table. The metallic thud resonated through the house. "She isn't just an abuser, Emma. She’s a ghost. She’s spent thirty years haunting this family, and I’ve been the one holding the door open for her."

He showed Emma the letters. As she read them, her hand went to her mouth. The implications were staggering. If his mother had murdered his biological father to secure a payout or cover a crime, she was a predator on a scale they had never imagined.

"She used you, Daniel," Emma whispered. "She raised you to be her anchor. If you were successful, if you were 'the good son,' no one would ever look into the past. No one would ever look for Arthur."

"I’m going to the police," Daniel said, his jaw tight. "Not for the nursery incident. For the murder of Arthur Hayes."

"Daniel, wait," Emma said, grabbing his arm. "If you do this, you destroy the only image of 'family' you have left. Are you ready for the world to know?"

Daniel looked at Sophie sleeping in the nursery monitor on the wall. He thought of the bruise on her arm. He thought of the way his mother had looked at them—not as a family to cherish, but as property to own.

"I’m not protecting her anymore," Daniel said, his voice cold. "I’m protecting my daughter from her bloodline."

But as he reached for the phone, the lights in the house died. Total, unnatural darkness swallowed the kitchen. From the hallway, the unmistakable sound of a heavy front door creaking open echoed through the house.
