Chapter 3: The Confession of an Accomplice

Ten minutes later, Sarah sat across from Julian and Clara at the wooden deck table. A glass of untouched lemonade sat before her, but her trembling hands remained tightly clasped in her lap.

"I resigned the week after the trial," Sarah began, her voice barely a whisper carried by the ocean breeze. "I couldn't stay in that house. Every corner echoed with what happened to you, Clara. And what happened to that poor baby."

"Why are you here, Sarah?" Julian asked, his voice firm but devoid of malice. "If you're asking for help with legal appeals for my mother, you're wasting your time."

"No," Sarah said quickly, her head shaking. "No, Mr. Vance. I want nothing to do with her. She is... she has consumed her own poison in that prison. I came because of a final obligation. Before the federal asset seizures were finalized, a safe deposit box was left in my care. A box registered under a dummy corporation, but meant for you."

Sarah reached into her coat pocket and placed a small, heavy silver key onto the table, along with a sealed white envelope.

"What is this?" Clara asked, eyeing the envelope cautiously.

"It’s proof," Sarah replied softly. "Proof that your father’s initial car accident fifteen years ago—the one your mother always claimed was just a tragic loss of control—wasn't an accident at all. Eleanor orchestrated it. She wanted the land your family owned to expand the Vance estate."

Julian and Clara stared at the envelope in stunned silence. The scope of Eleanor’s monstrous capability seemed to have no bottom.

"Why are you giving this to us now, Sarah?" Julian asked, his voice thick with emotion.

"Because I was a coward for fifteen years," Sarah said, a tear finally spilling over her lashes. "I looked the other way because I needed the paycheck, because I was afraid of her. But watching you two risk everything to save your child... it woke me up. You deserve the truth, and she deserves to answer for every single life she shattered."

Sarah stood up, pushing her chair back gently. She didn't wait for them to invite her to stay. She turned and walked down the path toward the gate, leaving the silver key and the dark, revealing truth behind her.
