Chapter 4: The Scavengers at the Gates

By mid-afternoon, the rain began to fall, turning the bustling Manhattan pavements into slick, glistening mirrors that reflected the angry red and yellow glare of traffic lights.

Richard Vanguard walked through the damp chill of Central Park, his expensive Italian leather shoes soaking through, his tailored wool coat clutched tightly around his trembling frame. He looked less like a corporate titan and more like a ghost haunting the city he once ruled. Every time his phone buzzed—which was constantly—he flinched. It was never a lifeline; it was always another automated notification from a frozen bank account, a rejected credit card, or a foreclosure warning.

His mother, Eleanor, was currently barricaded inside their massive Fifth Avenue penthouse, screaming down a disconnected landline at phantom lawyers who had all quietly blocked her number the moment the Sterling Group injunctions hit the public docket. The domestic staff had abandoned the estate hours ago when their payroll bounced. For the first time in their lives, the Vanguards were experiencing the paralyzing, suffocating weight of absolute helplessness.

Richard collapsed onto a wrought-iron park bench, burying his face in his hands. A sharp, bitter sob broke from his throat, quickly swallowed by the ambient roar of city traffic. He had everything—wealth, status, an unbreakable family name, and a wife he had treated like a disposable trophy. And in less than twenty-four hours, a woman he had mocked as a social nobody had erased every single trace of it.

"Regrets are a heavy coat in this weather, Richard," a calm, smooth voice echoed from behind the bench.

Richard snapped his head up, his bloodshot eyes widening in sheer horror. Standing under the shelter of a wide black umbrella was Victoria Vance—a high-profile investigative journalist and corporate vulture who had spent years trying to expose the illegal shadow-mergers and dirty backroom deals that the Vanguard family had used to build their empire. Victoria had tried to take them down for a decade, always coming up just short of the smoking gun.

"Victoria..." Richard choked out, scrambling to his feet, instinctively trying to regain some fraction of his vanished dignity. "This... this is an ambush. Get away from me."

"An ambush?" Victoria laughed softly, stepping closer, her expression a mix of pity and absolute contempt. "Richard, darling, you aren't important enough to ambush anymore. You're a corpse floating down the financial river, and I'm just here to watch you hit the waterfall."

She pulled a slim digital recorder from her coat pocket and clicked it on. "I've been reviewing the leaked forensic audits coming out of the Sterling Group's acquisition files. It turns out your family didn't just engage in aggressive corporate restructuring—you systematic embezzled pension funds from three separate regional manufacturing plants back in 2021 to prop up your failing real estate portfolio."

Richard’s blood ran ice cold. The pension fund embezzlement was the one crime his mother had kept strictly off the digital servers, hidden in an old analog safe in the basement of the estate—a safe that Clara had undoubtedly seized and handed over to federal investigators along with the rest of the corporate keys.

"That's... that's a lie," Richard stammered, stepping back until the wet wooden slats of the bench pressed against his knees. "The feds don't have proof..."

"The feds had a search warrant executed at your Fifth Avenue residence ten minutes ago," Victoria interrupted smoothly, flashing a predatory smile. "A federal task force just seized the basement safe. Your mother is currently being escorted out of the building in handcuffs, Richard. The Vanguard dynasty isn't just bankrupt; it's going to federal prison."

Before Richard could process the catastrophic blow, his phone rang one final time. With shaking, numb fingers, he pulled it from his pocket and answered.

"Mr. Vanguard?" a cold, unfamiliar voice spoke through the speaker. "This is Special Agent Miller of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. We have an active warrant for your arrest on charges of wire fraud, securities manipulation, and corporate embezzlement. Turn yourself in to the nearest precinct immediately, or we will dispatch a tactical unit to your current location."

The line went dead with a sharp click.

Richard dropped his phone into the muddy grass below. The rain poured down harder, plastering his hair to his forehead, as the reality of his total, inescapable destruction washed over him. He wasn't just ruined; he was completely, permanently erased.
