Chapter 3 : The Serpents in the Boardroom

Chapter 3 : The Serpents in the Boardroom
The morning sun did not break through the clouds over Manhattan; it bled through them, casting cold, geometric shadows across the obsidian glass of Harrington Global Headquarters.
Will Harrington stood at the floor-to-ceiling windows of the 50th-floor executive suite. His knuckles were still bruised and taped from his encounter with Marcus the night before. He hadn't slept. He smelled of hospital coffee and expensive wool, a volatile combination that matched the quiet fury hummed through his veins.
The heavy double doors of the boardroom clicked open.
"They're all seated, Mr. Harrington," his executive assistant, a sharp woman named Sandra, whispered. She didn't look at his bruised hand. She knew better. "But the atmosphere... it’s hostile. Arthur Sterling has already called an emergency vote."
Will turned slowly. "Arthur. Of course."
Arthur Sterling was the longest-serving board member, a man who had survived three market crashes by shedding his skin like a viper. He was also Marcus’s godfather.
Will adjusted his cuffs, felt the heavy weight of his father’s vintage gold watch against his wrist, and walked into the boardroom.
The chatter stopped instantly. Eleven billionaires and corporate titans sat around a flawless mahogany table, their faces unreadable. At the head of the table sat Arthur Sterling, leaning back, his hands clasped over a leather-bound folder.
"Will," Arthur said, his tone dripping with patronizing sympathy. "We saw the news. A tragic, public circus. To think Marcus... well, the allegations are severe. But the markets don't care about family drama. The stock dropped four percent at the opening bell."
Will did not sit down. He walked to the opposite end of the table, leaning his hands flat against the polished wood.
"They aren't allegations, Arthur. They are criminal charges backed by a confession and toxicology reports," Will said, his voice dropping into that terrifying, sub-zero register that had made him an empire builder. "And the market will recover. The question is, who in this room knew Marcus was altering my father’s medical care?"
A collective shift occurred in the room. Men twice his age suddenly found the grain of the mahogany very interesting.
Arthur laughed, a dry, rattling sound. "Let's not get ahead of ourselves, young man. Paranoia is an ugly look for a CEO. In fact, given the... emotional volatility you displayed outside the hospital last night, the board is questioning your current stability. Section 4 of the corporate bylaws allows a majority vote to place the company under a temporary receivership during a family crisis."
"You want to strip my authority while my father is still breathing in an ICU," Will said softly.
"We want to protect the shareholders," Arthur countered, sliding a document across the table. "I have seven signatures here. We are executing the vote of no confidence. Effective immediately, you are suspended from executive decisions."
Will didn't look at the paper. Instead, he reached into his pocket and pulled out a encrypted flash drive, tossing it onto the center of the table. It slid with a soft click, hitting Arthur’s folder.
"Go ahead and press the button, Arthur," Will said, a dangerous, razor-thin smile touching his lips. "But before you do, you might want to know what’s on that drive. Last night, federal investigators raided Marcus’s private penthouse. They found a secondary ledger."
Arthur’s hand hovered over the receivership document. His fingers twitched.
"For the last five years, someone has been approving offshore wire transfers to hide Marcus's short-selling of our own stock," Will continued, walking slowly down the side of the table. He stopped right behind Arthur. "A short-selling scheme that would have made billions the moment my father died of 'natural causes.' The digital signature on those authorizations didn't belong to Marcus. They belonged to the board's compliance chair."
Will leaned down, his voice a lethal whisper next to Arthur’s ear.
"That's you, Arthur. The FBI is downstairs. I give it three minutes before they bypass building security."
The color drained from Arthur’s face so fast it looked like a physical stroke. He looked around the table for help, but the other board members were already pulling their chairs back, abandoning him like rats on a sinking liner.
The boardroom doors burst open. Four federal agents in dark suits stepped inside.
"Arthur Sterling," the lead agent announced. "You are under arrest for corporate espionage, insider trading, and conspiracy to commit murder."

As they dragged Arthur out, screaming about his lawyers, Will walked to the head of the table and sat down in his father's chair. He looked at the remaining nine board members.
"Now," Will said, tapping his bruised knuckles against the wood. "Let's talk about the new direction of Harrington Global. And if anyone else here has a ticket to Mexico... I suggest you leave it on the table."
