CHAPTER 3: The Price of Arrogance

By 8:00 a.m. the next morning, the "Donovan Empire" was beginning to show cracks. Richard walked into his boardroom, expecting to squash the rumor of his wife’s departure with a ruthless display of corporate dominance. Instead, he found the atmosphere chilling.
His chief financial officer didn't look up from his tablet. "Richard, we have a problem. The Hartwell trust has pulled its liquidity from the offshore accounts."
Richard slammed his briefcase onto the mahogany table. "What are you talking about? That money is tied to our joint venture."
"It was," the CFO said, his voice devoid of emotion. "Until 4:00 a.m. this morning. The funds have been reallocated to a private account held by a sole proprietor. Ms. Clara Hartwell."
Richard went pale. He had leveraged that money to secure a massive real estate deal in Dubai. Without the Hartwell backing, the entire venture was underwater. His phone began to buzz incessantly—calls from investors, calls from his lawyers, and calls from Sabrina.
He didn't answer any of them. He realized then that he hadn't just lost a wife; he had lost his leverage. He had treated me like an accessory, a decorative piece of his lifestyle, while all along I was the architect of his prosperity.

He tried to call my private line, but it was disconnected. He tried to call the Hartwell estate, but he was blocked by a legal firewall so dense it would take his best lawyers weeks to even find a loophole.
Richard leaned back in his chair, the weight of his own arrogance pressing down on him. For the first time in his life, he wasn't the man in control. He was the man who had burned his bridge, and he was currently watching it collapse into the sea.
