Chapter 2 : The Account of the Carters

Chapter 2 : The Account of the Carters

The heavy glass doors of the banquet hall groaned shut behind Isabella, slicing the grand ballroom’s muffled violin music in half. Outside, the night air was sharp and unforgiving, carrying the first heavy drops of a sudden summer downpour.

She walked down the sweeping marble steps of the Sinclair Grand Pavilion alone, her fingers tightening around the crushed pink gift box against her chest. Her white maternity dress caught the fierce wind, billowing around her like a broken sail.

"Isabella! Wait! Stop!"

The desperate, heavy thuds of Ethan’s polished dress shoes echoed down the wet stone stairs. He burst through the pavilion doors without his jacket, his silk tie crooked, his face flushed with a terrifying mix of panic and ruined pride.

"Bella, look at me!" He lunged forward, his hand reaching out to grab her elbow.

The moment his fingers brushed her skin, Isabella stopped. She didn't flinch. She didn't scream. She simply turned her head and looked at his hand resting on her sleeve.

Her gaze was so utterly cold, so completely detached, that Ethan’s hand dropped instantly as if he had touched an open flame.

"Don't touch me, Ethan," she said, her voice barely louder than the rising wind, yet carrying a weight that made him take a half-step back. "The man who touched me this morning wouldn't have stood beside another woman planning my disposal. You are a stranger to me now."

"It was a mistake, Bella! I was drunk, the pressure of the anniversary merger—" Ethan stammered, his confident corporate vocabulary completely failing him. He looked up at the glass doors, where several wealthy investors and family board members were now staring through the tinted glass, watching the downfall of the Sinclair golden boy in real-time. "We can fix this. We have to. The press... the family trust... think about our baby!"

Isabella let out a soft, breathy sound that was tragically close to a laugh. She looked at the man she had loved for seven years, the man she had comforted through corporate battles, the man whose lies she had blindly believed.

"The baby is the only thing I am thinking about," Isabella whispered, her hand shielding her stomach beneath the damp fabric of her dress. "And because I love this child, I will ensure they never breathe the toxic air of your house. By tomorrow morning, my father’s legal team will deliver the divorce petition to your office."

Ethan’s panic instantly shifted, a flash of his inherent, arrogant malice breaking through his desperate facade. "Your father’s legal team? Isabella, be realistic. Carter Logistics is a mid-tier firm. The Sinclair Group controls forty percent of the commercial real estate in this city. If you file for divorce on these grounds, I will tie you up in family court for the next ten years. I will make sure you don't get a single cent of the Sinclair trust. You’ll have nothing."

"She won't need a single cent of your blood money, Sinclair."

A powerful, commanding voice boomed from the darkness of the VIP parking pavilion.

A sleek, armored black sedan slid silently to the curb, its headlights cutting through the heavy rain. The door opened, and a tall, silver-haired man stepped out, holding a massive black umbrella. It was Arthur Carter—Isabella’s father. But behind him stepped a younger man in a crisp charcoal suit, carrying a heavy leather briefcase.

Ethan’s breath hitched. He recognized the man in the suit instantly. It was Julian Vance, the most ruthless forensic corporate litigator on the East Coast—a man the Sinclair Group had tried to hire for years, only to be repeatedly rejected.

"Arthur?" Ethan swallowed hard, his voice trembling. "This is a private marital dispute—"

"It stopped being private the moment you threatened my daughter on a public street," Arthur Carter said, his voice ringing with a terrifying paternal fury as he stepped between Ethan and Isabella, shielding his daughter beneath the umbrella.

Julian Vance stepped forward, opening the leather briefcase just enough to reveal a stack of illuminated digital ledgers.

"Mr. Sinclair," Julian said, his tone entirely professional and utterly lethal. "While you were inside celebrating your anniversary, my firm finalized the acquisition of the secondary debt bonds for Sinclair International. It appears your mistress, Miss Vance—who happens to be a distant, disowned cousin of mine—has been using your private corporate credit lines to mask a thirty-million-dollar deficit in your South Side development project."

Ethan went completely pale, the rain washing over his face making him look like a ghost. "What?"

"Isabella didn't just bring you a gift tonight, Ethan," Arthur Carter whispered, his eyes narrowing with absolute disgust. "She brought you her freedom. We’ve been tracking your corporate fraud for three months, waiting for the exact moment your arrogance made you careless. You thought the Carters were weak because we play by the rules."

Arthur looked back at Isabella, his expression softening into pure love as he guided her into the back seat of the secure vehicle.

"But you forgot one thing, boy," Arthur said, turning back to Ethan one last time. "A father will rebuild an entire city just to clear the path for his daughter’s escape. Enjoy the ballroom, Ethan. It's the last luxury asset you'll ever stand in."

The heavy door of the sedan clicked shut, sealing Isabella away from the wreckage of her marriage. As the car pulled away into the rainy night, Ethan stood frozen on the stairs, completely soaked, watching the red taillights disappear.
