Chapter 4: The House of Cards

While the Sterling estate breathed with newfound life, federal holding cell block 4B at the Manhattan Federal Detention Center was a stark, suffocating nightmare of concrete and steel.

Victoria Sterling paced the narrow perimeter of her cell like a caged, rabid animal. Her immaculate designer suit was gone, replaced by a coarse, ill-fitting orange jumpsuit. Her hair, usually styled to perfection, fell in wild, unkempt strands around a face distorted by sheer rage and disbelief.

The heavy iron door rattled sharply as a correctional officer struck it with a baton. "Sterling! Legal visit. Move."

Dragged into a cold, fluorescent-lit visitation booth, Victoria slammed her palms down onto the metal table opposite her defense attorney, a high-priced corporate fixer who now looked thoroughly defeated.

"Get me out of here," Victoria hissed, her voice vibrating with venom. "Call federal judge Harrison. Tell him I want bail immediately. I have offshore accounts in Zurich that can cover whatever bond amount they set!"

The attorney adjusted his tie nervously, refusing to meet her eyes. "There is no bail, Victoria. The judge deemed you a severe flight risk. Furthermore... the federal prosecutor has expanded the indictments."

Victoria’s breath hitched. "Expanded? On what grounds?"

"The financial audits Clara Sterling submitted to the Supreme Financial Directorate didn't just expose the arson and your identity fraud," the attorney explained grimly, sliding a thick stack of court documents across the table. "They uncovered a decade of systemic embezzlement from the Sterling pension funds, millions funneled into illegal offshore tax evasion schemes, and direct links to the corporate sabotage of at least three competing tech firms."

Victoria stared at the papers, her eyes scanning the terrifying list of charges. Life imprisonment. The words seemed to jump off the page, mocking her decades of ruthless ambition. She had spent twenty years scheming, manipulating, and destroying lives to secure a throne built on sand, only to watch it collapse into dust overnight.

"She ruined me," Victoria whispered, her voice cracking as a hysterical laugh bubbled up from her throat. "She took everything!"

"No, Victoria," a calm, chilling voice echoed from the doorway of the visitation booth.

Victoria snapped her head up. Standing in the doorway, framed by the cold steel of the federal facility, was Clara. She wore a tailored charcoal coat, her posture immaculate, her eyes radiating an absolute, untouchable power. Two federal guards stood respectfully behind her.

Clara stepped inside the booth, stopping just a few feet from the glass partition. She looked at the pathetic, ruined woman in the orange jumpsuit with a gaze entirely devoid of hatred—she looked at her with pity.

"You didn't build an empire, Victoria," Clara said softly, her voice carrying an effortless authority. "You built a prison of lies. And now, you are simply serving the sentence you authored for yourself ten years ago."

Victoria lunged toward the glass, screaming obscenities, her face twisted in primal rage, but the guards immediately stepped forward, pinning her back into her chair. Clara didn't flinch. She simply turned her back on her defeated rival, walking calmly out of the bleak holding facility and back into the brilliant Manhattan sunlight.
