Chapter 4: Shadows of the Past

While Clara was reshaping the corporate landscape upstairs, thousands of miles away in a sterile, fluorescent-lit holding cell, Julian Vance was learning what it truly meant to be powerless.

The luxury suits, the designer watches, and the endless stream of sycophants had all been stripped away, replaced by a coarse orange jumpsuit and the deafening, metallic echo of prison doors slamming shut. The cell was cramped, smelling of industrial cleaner and stale air.

Julian paced the concrete floor like a caged animal, his hands trembling as he stared at his empty wrists. The arrogance that had defined his entire existence had completely evaporated, leaving behind a pathetic, snarling void of pure rage and self-pity.

The heavy iron door rattled sharply, and a correctional officer struck the bars with a baton. "Vance! Legal visit. Move."

Dragged into a cold, glass-partitioned visitation booth, Julian slammed his palms down onto the metal table, his eyes bloodshot and wide with hysteria. Sitting on the other side was his high-priced defense attorney, looking thoroughly exhausted and unwilling to meet his gaze.

"Get me out of here!" Julian hissed through the intercom speaker, his voice cracking with desperation. "Call Judge Harrison! Tell him I'll post a ten-million-dollar bail! I want my phone, I want my laptop, and I want an appeal filed by tonight!"

The attorney adjusted his tie, letting out a heavy, defeated sigh. "Julian, you don't understand. There is no bail. The federal prosecutor has classified you as an extreme flight risk, and the evidence Clara Sterling submitted is airtight. It’s not just domestic abuse and assault; it’s an extensive federal racketeering case."

"Clara..." Julian snarled, his teeth grinding together so hard his jaw ached. "She’s a nobody! I picked her up out of obscurity! She tricked me!"

"She outplayed you, Julian," the attorney corrected bluntly, sliding a thick stack of court documents across the slot. "And it gets worse. The Sterling Foundation has executed a complete hostile takeover of Vance Enterprises. The board didn't even fight it. They handed over the keys to avoid prosecution. Your company, your assets, your offshore accounts—they all belong to Clara now."

Julian stared at the papers through the glass, his breath hitching in his throat. The realization hit him like a physical blow to the chest. He hadn't just lost a lawsuit; he had been completely, permanently erased from the world he thought he owned. He was a non-entity, a footnote in the history of corporate greed, locked away in a concrete box while the woman he abused sat upon the throne he once commanded.

"No..." Julian choked out, pressing his forehead against the cold glass as a helpless, pathetic sob broke from his throat. "No, no, no..."

The attorney stood up, gathering his files without a shred of sympathy. "Prepare yourself for a very long trial, Julian. You're going away for a very, very long time."

As the guard dragged a weeping, broken Julian back down the sterile hallway, the steel doors locked behind him with a final, echoing clank, sealing his fate forever.
