CHAPTER 3 : The Digital Siege

The basement of the hotel was no longer a place of safety; it was the epicenter of a manhunt. As the laundry truck disappeared into the rainy city grid, Maria stood on the loading dock, her heart pounding with the weight of the flash drive in her pocket. She knew she couldn't just walk out the front door. The lobby was swarming with private security, and the hotel was now under a total electronic lockdown.

Maria retreated into the bowels of the maintenance level, utilizing her knowledge of the hotel’s ancient service tunnel network—a labyrinth built before the gala expansion. She moved through the dark, cramped shafts, the smell of damp concrete and electricity filling her lungs.

Above her, the hotel erupted in chaos. She could hear the muffled shouts of Vanguard agents through the ventilation grates. They had discovered the empty cart in the basement, and they were tearing the laundry room apart. Maria didn't look back. She navigated toward the city’s old underground subway access point, a route no one used anymore.

When she finally emerged into the alleyway three blocks away, she was soaked to the bone and shivering. She didn't head home; she headed to the offices of The Daily Clarion, an independent news outlet known for taking on the city's power players.

She walked into the lobby, her blue cleaning cap pulled low, and approached the night editor, a grizzled man named Elias who was closing up shop. He looked at the frantic woman in a stained uniform and was about to dismiss her until she placed the blood-stained flash drive on his desk.

"This came from Evelyn of Apex Corporation," Maria said, her voice shaking but her resolve iron-clad. "It’s their offshore surveillance network. They know every secret of every politician in this city. They’re coming for us, but if you upload this now, they won't be able to stop the fallout."

Elias looked from the drive to Maria, recognizing the look of a person who had walked through hell to deliver the truth. He didn't ask questions. He plugged it in. The screen lit up with files, maps, and financial routing numbers that laid bare the entire corporate conspiracy.
