CHAPTER 4 : THE COUNTER-ATTACK

CHAPTER 4 : THE COUNTER-ATTACK
By noon, the atmosphere in the Vance executive suite on the top floor of downtown’s premier financial tower was electric. David sat at the head of the titanium conference table, flanked by his legal team's senior partners and a cybersecurity specialist he had hired directly from federal intelligence contracts.
Projected onto the massive smart-board at the front of the room was a complex organizational chart connecting Sarah to Richard Sterling—the CEO of Vanguard Holdings and a notorious corporate raider known for ruthless, cutthroat tactics.

"Mr. Vance, our forensic accountants have traced the digital wire transfers originating from Sarah’s personal offshore accounts," the cybersecurity specialist, a sharp woman named Elena, explained as she tapped a sequence on her tablet. "The funds didn't come from Sarah’s family wealth—which is virtually nonexistent. They were funneled directly through three intermediary shell corporations controlled entirely by Richard Sterling."
A murmur rippled through the legal team. One of the senior partners leaned forward, adjusting his glasses. "This changes everything, David. We aren't just dealing with a local elder abuse and fraud case anymore. This is a federal RICO violation involving corporate conspiracy, industrial espionage, and state-line intimidation."
"Which means Sarah is facing twenty-to-life if she doesn't cooperate, and Sterling is looking at federal penitentiary time," David added smoothly, folding his hands on the table. "I want a complete injunction filed against Vanguard Holdings by three o'clock this afternoon. Freeze their acquisition assets, flag every suspicious transaction with the SEC, and leak the preliminary findings to the financial press."
"That’s a nuclear option, David," the attorney cautioned. "Sterling will retaliate with everything he has."
"Let him try," David said coldly. "He crossed a line when he brought his corporate warfare into my mother’s kitchen and threatened an innocent woman who saved her life. I want his empire dismantled brick by brick."
While the legal team scrambled to execute the master plan, David's phone buzzed on the table. It was an incoming call from the county detention center. He swiped the screen and pressed it to his ear.
"Mr. Vance? This is Warden Hayes at the county facility," a gruff voice announced. "Your former fiancé, Sarah, is demanding to speak with you. She claims she has information regarding Vanguard Holdings that could save her from maximum sentencing."
David let out a cold, humorless chuckle. "Put her on speaker, Warden."
A moment of static crackled over the line, followed by the frantic, tear-stained voice of a woman who had completely lost her footing in the world she tried to manipulate.
"David! Please, you have to listen to me!" Sarah sobbed hysterically through the receiver. "Richard Sterling tricked me! He promised we would share the wealth after the estate was signed over, but he was going to cut me out entirely! He threatened my family if I didn't do what he said!"
"Your family?" David interrupted, his voice dripping with absolute ice. "You stood in my mother's home, shoved an elderly woman in a wheelchair, and tried to destroy everything my father built. You made your bed, Sarah. Now you get to lie in it."
"David, wait! I have the physical flash drive containing audio recordings of Sterling giving me the instructions to forge the trust! I hid it in the apartment downtown! I'll give it to you! Just please help me get a plea deal!" she begged, her voice cracking with sheer desperation.
David exchanged a knowing glance with Elena across the table, who was already furiously typing on her laptop to trace the signal and cross-reference the apartment address Sarah mentioned.
"We'll see about that, Sarah," David replied flatly before disconnecting the call. He looked at Elena. "Did you get the address?"
May you like

"Got it," Elena smiled sharply, spinning her laptop around. "A luxury loft on Fifth Street leased under one of Sterling’s shell companies. Shall I dispatch our private security team to secure the drive before Vanguard’s cleaning crew gets there?"
"Do it," David commanded. "And notify the FBI field office. The net is closing."
