The tranquility of the Montgomery estate was short-lived. Three weeks after baby Hope’s first birthday, a sleek, black sedan pulled up to the main gate of the Hope Foundation’s downtown headquarters. Out stepped Victoria Vance—a high-powered corporate attorney whose ruthless reputation preceded her in every courtroom in New York. She carried a leather briefcase filled with legal notices that threatened to shatter the peaceful life Ethan and Hannah had fought so hard to build.
Inside the executive office, Ethan and Liam were reviewing the foundation’s annual budget when Victoria walked in unannounced, accompanied by two process servers. She placed a stack of sealed legal documents directly onto Ethan’s mahogany desk with a cold, calculated smile.
"Mr. Montgomery," Victoria said smoothly, her voice laced with polished venom. "I am the court-appointed receiver for the residual assets of the Vance-Chloe Trust. We have filed an emergency injunction to freeze all financial accounts associated with the Hope Foundation."
Liam stood up immediately, his face turning pale. "That’s impossible. The foundation’s assets were cleared by federal auditors six months ago during Chloe’s trial. Every penny was verified."
"Verified by whom? You?" Victoria chuckled, turning her sharp gaze toward Liam. "A man who barely escaped conviction himself? We have uncovered new evidence suggesting that funds from Chloe’s illegal offshore accounts were funneled into this foundation prior to her arrest. Under federal asset forfeiture laws, the government—and my clients—are reclaiming the title to this building and all subsidiary holdings."
The news sent shockwaves through the organization. Within hours, local media outlets caught wind of the story. Headlines blared across news sites and social media feeds: “Is the Hope Foundation Built on Stolen Millions?”
When Ethan returned home that evening, the weight of the world was on his shoulders. Hannah met him at the front door, her eyes filled with concern. She had already seen the news alerts on her phone.
"Ethan, tell me this isn't happening," Hannah said, taking his cold hands into hers. "Chloe is in prison. How can she still be doing this to us?"
