Chapter 3 : The Phantom in the Glass

Five years had passed since the night the penthouse shattered.

The Sunningdale Estate was everything the penthouse was not: sprawling, grounded, bathed in natural sunlight, and fortified with the most advanced security systems Eleanor’s tech empire could engineer. The high-tech gates, biometric scanners, and discreet perimeter cameras offered a sense of impenetrable safety. Here, Eleanor had rebuilt her life. Her tech company had doubled in valuation, but her greatest achievement was her daughter, Lily—a bright, energetic five-year-old with her mother’s resilient spirit.

Maria, now the estate’s chief manager and Lily’s godmother, moved through the sunlit kitchen, preparing breakfast. The bond between Eleanor and Maria had transcended friendship; they were sisters forged in the fires of survival. The trauma of that night was a silent ghost they both acknowledged but refused to let dictate their lives.

However, peace is a fragile construct for those who have looked true evil in the eye.

It began on a Tuesday morning. The autumn air was crisp as Maria walked out to the grand driveway to retrieve the morning deliveries. Among the pristine, automated packages dropped by secure couriers, a single, unmarked manila envelope lay resting against the wrought-iron security gate. It hadn’t been scanned. It hadn’t triggered the proximity alarms.

Maria’s heart performed a familiar, terrifying stutter. She put on a pair of gardening gloves before picking it up, her instincts from five years ago instantly reawakening.

Inside the security office, Eleanor sat beside Marcus, her head of security—a former Navy SEAL whose loyalty to Eleanor was absolute. Maria placed the envelope on the stainless-steel table. Using a pair of tweezers, Marcus carefully extracted a single, polaroid photograph.

Eleanor’s breath caught in her throat. Her blood ran icy cold.

The photograph was of Lily, taken just yesterday at her exclusive, highly secure private kindergarten. The angle suggested it was taken from a great distance, perhaps from the wooded hill overlooking the playground. Scrawled across the white margin of the photograph in jagged, black ink were five words: Glass breaks easily, my love.

"Richard," Eleanor whispered, the name tasting like ash in her mouth.

"He's in a maximum-security federal penitentiary, Eleanor," Marcus said, his jaw tight. "He has no access to the outside world. His communications are monitored."

"He doesn't need to be outside to reach me," Eleanor replied, her voice trembling before hardening into a steel resolve. She looked at Maria, seeing her own fierce determination reflected in her friend's eyes. "He was a billionaire with deep, dark connections before I took my company back. He’s found someone on the outside. A proxy."

The trauma that had lain dormant in Eleanor’s chest threatened to pull her under, but she looked at the monitor displaying a live feed of Lily sleeping peacefully in her bedroom. She was not the helpless, pregnant woman on a shattered staircase anymore. She was a titan.

"Lock down the estate," Eleanor commanded, her voice ringing with newfound authority. "Pull Lily out of school. I want a full sweep of the perimeter, and I want you to find out who has been visiting Richard in prison. Money leaves a trail, Marcus. Find it. We are not playing defense this time."

In a dark, concrete visitation booth hundreds of miles away, Richard sat in his orange jumpsuit, the arrogant smirk returning to his weathered, aging face. He picked up the heavy telephone receiver, looking through the reinforced glass at his corrupt former attorney, a man whose gambling debts made him highly malleable.

"Did she get the message?" Richard asked, his voice a sinister rasp.

"Delivered this morning," the attorney nervously replied. "But Richard, this is dangerous. If her security traces this back to me..."

"They won't," Richard interrupted, his eyes gleaming with a manic obsession. "She took everything from me. My company, my wealth, my freedom. I want her to feel the terror I feel in this cage. We proceed to phase two."
