Chapter 4 : The Glass Threshold

Chapter 4 : The Glass Threshold
The realization that she had been managed, not just by Julian but by the woman she had despised, drained the last of the color from Clara’s face. She looked at Julian, hoping to find a flicker of the man who had once doted on her, but there was nothing. He was staring at her with the same detachment one might afford a malfunctioning piece of machinery.
"The merger was a test," Julian said, turning away from the window to face them. "A test to see who would try to steal the keys to the kingdom when they thought I was distracted. You failed, Clara. But Elena... Elena proved that she was the only one capable of surviving the vacuum I left behind."
He walked toward the center of the room, his footsteps muffled by the plush carpet. He stopped in front of Clara, towering over her. "You are not a partner. You are a liability. And in this industry, liabilities are deleted."

The doctor stepped forward, holding a tablet that displayed the final, damning cascade of files. "The authorities are downstairs, Clara. Not because I called them, but because the evidence packet you uploaded to the 'safe' server was automatically redirected to the precinct. You didn't just sabotage the merger; you provided the roadmap for your own indictment."
Clara looked around the room, desperate for an exit, a lie, a weapon—anything. But the room was barren. The elegance that had once comforted her now felt suffocating, a high-altitude tomb of status. She had played for everything, risked everything, and in the span of an hour, she had lost her future, her reputation, and the very ground she stood upon.
"Why?" she whispered, her voice cracking.

"Because," Julian replied, his gaze flickering briefly to Elena, "I wanted to know if there was anyone left in this city who could outthink me. I found my answer. It wasn't you."
The tactical team moved in, their movements synchronized and cold. As they placed their hands on her shoulders, the touch felt like a branding. Clara didn't struggle. The bravado had been burned away, leaving only the hollow core of a woman who had spent her life chasing a power she never truly understood.
