Chapter 8: Whispers in the Gallery
Three days later, the mansion was under a strict lockdown, yet the air felt brittle, like glass about to shatter. Sarah had taken control of the domestic operations with a clinical efficiency that baffled the veteran staff. She moved through the house with a master key in her pocket and a sharp eye for detail. She wasn't just managing the household; she was auditing it.
She stood in the gallery, staring at the space where the painting had hung. Forensic investigators had been there, but they’d missed something. Sarah knelt, running her fingers along the wainscoting. She noticed a faint, unnatural groove in the wood—a hidden latch. She pressed it.
With a soft click, a small compartment popped open. Inside, there was no money, no jewelry. Just a flash drive and a handwritten note with a single address in the city’s industrial district.
“If I disappear, the truth about the Montgomery fortune dies with me. But they won’t stop at the boy. Next is the empire.”
The handwriting was jagged, frantic. It belonged to Elena, the woman who had orchestrated Leo’s kidnapping. Sarah’s heart hammered against her ribs. Elena was in custody, but this note suggested she wasn't working alone. She was part of a machine, and the machine was still running.
"What are you doing?"
Sarah jumped, slamming the compartment shut. Arthur was standing in the doorway, his brow furrowed. He didn't look angry, just wary.
"I... I found something," Sarah said, pulling the flash drive from the hidden space. "Arthur, this wasn't just about money. Elena wasn't kidnapping Leo to ransom him. She was trying to erase him. She wanted the Montgomery lineage to end."
Arthur walked over, his expression darkening. He took the drive, his hand trembling slightly. "If that’s true, then there’s a mole in this house. Someone who helped her map the mansion, someone who knew the security blind spots."
"I have the list of staff who have access to the west wing," Sarah said, her voice dropping to a whisper. "But it’s a long list."

"Then we shorten it," Arthur said, his eyes turning cold. "From now on, no one enters or leaves this wing without your clearance. And Sarah? Keep that gun in your bedside drawer. I don't trust anyone anymore."
As Arthur walked away, Sarah felt a chill that had nothing to do with the air conditioning. She realized that by saving Leo, she hadn't just secured a job. She had stepped onto a battlefield, and she had no idea who the enemy was.
